Listening to a factual series called "Daughters of Britannia" on BBC7.
Felicity Wakefield, the wife of the British Ambassador to Beirut (1975), described sitting on the embassy balcony with her visiting son, and remarked how the bird sounds were unlike any other she'd heard, a peculiar "zinging" noise.
He replied "Mummy, that's no bird. That's bullets."
The series is a great example of the British stiff upper lip
