Supersonic bullet cracks done *right*

Don't bullets slow down over distance? You're saying it would still be going supersonic the whole time?

91/30 shooting typical 1940's vintage Russian light ball will still have ~1700 fps (+/- ~25) at 500 yards. M38 and M44 are a little lower, only about 1550-1600 (+/- ~30) or so at the same range. They're going to remain supersonic until somewhere around 1000 yards or more.

lol Then how would a bullet, fired at a distance, make a crack sound when it has already made it's sonic boom after leaving the barrel? Since bullets do slow down over time, wouldn't they lose that sonic boom effect also?

Especially at close range when you can't hear it in the first place.

Don't worry about anymore arguments heh, I've got no other questions.

You've got a misconception about sonic booms. It's not an isolated event like the sound of the rifle firing. It's the shockwave of the bullet's travel through the air. As long as the bullet is traveling faster than the speed of sound, the shockwave is still right there following it, and it won't go away until the round goes subsonic again.

How can you hear the bullet coming if it's traveling supersonic?

If the bullet is going to hit you, and it's still supersonic, you -won't- hear it coming. If you hear a supersonic bullet, it's already -passed- you.

then you havent spotted for a HMG (the M2 .50) crew, spotting means kneeling to the left of the gun carriage, so you arent behind the gun, more like beside the barrel, imagine being punched in the face in 600 SPM (slaps per minute), you cant see squat while its firing, and when it stops firing, your teeth hurts like mad.. and thats when you need to focus with the binocs on the spot thats fired on to correct the gunner.

Spoken like a truly knowledgeable person. Occasionally we'd mount the 50's on the side of the ship and play with them ... made paint chips fall out of the overhead all the way at the other end of the damn ship. Still, a Mk 45 5"/54 beats Ma Deuce for pure sound pressure any day of the week. :)

Nice Vid, although the sound seems a bit off I can see what you are trying to show. If this could be done right, it would make a great mutator or even part of the main game itself.

On another note, does anybody think the grenade-explosion sound in Brothers in Arms is more realistic...or is too high pitched??

-----------------------------------------------
I dont think its very much "off"... just listen to the real life clip in the middle..
To make it 100% realistic I found impossible.. cause Ro engine wouldnt let have the crack longer than 0.3-5 seconds... It if was longer, it clipped the whole sound off so you couldnt hear anything! (anyone know how to fix this)... Try your self.. or anyone who can..
I've got the real life samples, just email me at [email protected] to get em...

Here are some comparisons:

This one is mine (sorry for crappy Sound quality):

This clip is from real life:

Here is a clip from BF realitymod:

This topic now being one of the most popular ones on this forum should get some attention soon I hope...
I Will try to make a better demo with higher sound quality... mean while ...
