News From the Front

Today we will be releasing our first patch for Red Orchestra: Ostfront over Steam. This patch will be released as a “Beta” meaning you will launch RO with a special command line to access is. This allows those fans and server admins that wish to try out the latest fixes or enhancements to do so. The Beta update should be fully compatible with all standard clients and servers. The main focus of this patch is improving the stability and performance of the Ostfront dedicated server software for both Windows and Linux. Also included in the patch are client side fixes, server admin requested functionality, and functionality requested by TeamWarFare League for league/ladder play. This Beta patch will be rolled out to all users as soon as adequate testing is done to ensure it is ready for the public.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the fans that have helped make Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 one of the top 20 multiplayer games in the world within just weeks of the release (source www.gamespy.com/stats). We would also like to thank you all for your patience while we worked through some of the initial bumps at launch. For those of you that don’t follow the forums some of the fixes we have implemented so far include fixing the issue where AOL users had no servers listed in their browsers, and a Steam issue which would prevent some users from connecting to servers. We also have word that Zone Labs is working on a fix that should address the compatibility issues that ZoneAlarm has with Red Orchestra: Ostfront.

Finally I would like to briefly mention some of the upcoming bits that we have planned. We are currently slaving away on getting the Mod Tools ready for release. We hit a couple of unexpected snags while working on these but they should be available soon if all goes well from here on. Additionally, there have been many questions on the forums about what the future holds for RO: Ostfront updates. Aside from the obvious bug fixing and optimizations, our content team is already hard at work on our first content update which should be released about a month from now. We will save the details of what will be in that update for another post. Our plan at Tripwire is to continue to add content to the game as long as you the RO fans keep playing the game, so plan on seeing more maps, vehicles, weapons, and features in the future.

Launching the beta patch as a client:

To launch the beta patch as a client you need to add the following to the shortcut you use to launch either Steam or Redorchestra:
-beta ro

Here are a couple of examples:

1) Adding the shortcut to your steam shortcut:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\steam.exe" -beta ro

2) Adding the shortcut to your red orchestra shortcut:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 1200 -beta ro

Updating your windows server with HLDS to use the beta patch:

HldsUpdateTool.exe -command update -game redorchestra -beta ro

Updating your linux server with HLDS to use the beta patch:

steam -command update -game redorchestra -beta ro

Full Changelog:

RO Retail 1.001 Changelog

**Additions**

- Added the Friendly Fire Punishment options
to the webadmin and in game server
configuration menus for easier access.

- Added the Death Message Mode settings to
the webadmin and in game configuration
menus for easier access.

- Added the ability to see the all player's
unique IDs (basically a version of the Steam ID)
in game. Type the command "ListPlayers" to get
a list of all player's IDs. (Requested by
Team Warfare League.)

**Fixes**

- Fixed a bug where webadmin would stop
responding and the server's ping would show
as "?" in the server browser.

- Fixed a memory leak that affected both clients
and servers. This memory leak would essentially
cause two maps to be loaded into memory at the
same time greatly increasing ram and CPU usage.

- Fixed a recoil related bug affecting both bolt
action rifles and semi automatic rifles that
would cause the shot to be far off of where the
player aimed occasionally when playing online.

- Fixed a bug where TK banning was not working
properly.

- Updated Linux server with improved stability.

- Fixed a typo in the server browser heading.

- Fixed an exploit where players could have no
both no motion blur and no alternate "blackout"
effect by using certain driver and setting
combinations.

Will RO eventually be updated automatically over steam? That is usually what happens with games on steam, and I'm not good at modifying files, so I was wondering if I should just wait around for the automatic update.
You don't need to modify any files except for the Steam shortcut on your desktop or wherever you have it. Right click on it, select Preferences, add the text -beta ro in the end of the Target field, press OK, and run Steam. That's it.

But if you don't want to do this, yes, it will be updated automatically eventually, whenever the public patch comes out. :)
