Ubisoft's new DRM

Yeah, it's nice not having a publisher breathing down your next, and requiring you to contract DRM houses before the game is even done, because they are already counting the dollars they expect to lose through piracy.

I'm amazed thease people have risen to the ranks they have, they seem to demonstrate an amazing lack of vision and buisness sense, and from what chatter i have heard from Devolopers in the gaming bizz, it's a bigger problem than i might seem at first glance to outsiders..

Now don't get me wrong, i can understand why companies would want to protect their investment from theft, but they really coulden't go about it in a worse way than they currently are, everything about their approach is flawed, including how they calculate losses (counting every single pirate download as a lost sale is so out of touch with reality, it's not even funny).

If they want more people to buy the games, they have to make it worth the customers while, make it attractive to buy instead of leeching, getting and installing the game should be dead easy, and offer perks or a good service to legit customers, in a non-intrusive way, something people can access just by having a legit CD/Online-key or some other simple proof of purchase, if you want people to buy the games, make sure the pirates are left with the feeling "i wish i had bought this, then my game would be better".

Instead they do the reverse, it is the paying customer who is left with the felling "i wish i had pirated this, the pirate version is better", and in what world does that make sense or lead to more legit customers?
All DRM does is hassle paying customers, and for what? history has proven time and time again that it doesen't work, it's not an effective anti-theft meassure, it'll be cracked within houers or days at the most, and pirates will get it regardless, all it does effectively is hassle paying customers, and cost the game sales because customers like myself will refuse to buy the game, and many others will choose to pirate it instead because the pirate version is the superiour one.

The age old "reward versus punishment" principal does work.. only the game bizz has got it in reverse, they deal out punishment to legit customers, whilst the pirates are rewarded with a free game that is also a superior product.

This is what the bizz must grasp if they want to deal with the pirate issue, buying the game must be a reward, it must be better than the pirate alternative, or it automatically becomes a punishment in comparison.

I guess it's because of the stereotype that only easy influenced, socially awkward kids play video games, and some developers reinforce that stereotype with the games they create. On the other hand, one of the reasons why I like Bioware is because they aren't afraid to make a game with mature themes and intelligent story, which helps to prove that video games are just as powerful a medium as are movies.

I am torn between sexing the mad hot aussie accented chick and sexing the helmet chick, then there's the weird tattoo chick on top of that

Too many sexing options

Haha, I think I know what you're trying to get at, but I think you also know what I'm talking about when I refer to Bioware. When speaking of mature themes I'm talking about the testing of morality, the complexity of the language, the story elements, etc. Perhaps giving the player the ability to romance most characters in Mass Effect 2 was a little overboard though, and most people think that a sex scene is what suddenly makes something "mature".

True, your points are valid, I was just taking a stab at how some people see certain elements of Bioware games.

Hey at least you were on the same page as me :D

Too bad a game like "heavy rain" wont be released on PC for some time beign. At least it seems like a intresting concept to introduce a more mature story. In fact...some games allready tried to introduce a more "mature" story but failed on the market. What sells will be produced, and with the high development costs for major AAA titels its no wonder that publishers shy away from the risk of even trying. The saiviour here might be the indie game scene. Things like "the path" come to mind.

Iam allways looking for small games that try something diffrent..i feel repelled from most major titels nowadays since its only "been there, done that, cgi/graphics wankfest, consolized, dumbed down massproduct bull****"

One whould think that with a average age of 30 for the people that spend the most money on computergames/hardware there whould be a market for something diffrent.

And comme on...those "sex scenes" in Mass Afeect are just funny...they dont add ANYTHING..

nobody ban porn, violent movies, or just movies about gay people, but as soon as a videogame touches those topics, specially sex and homosexuality, everybody goes mad about it.

It's more related to the fact gamers are not used to certain things which other people are in general. Anyone remember Aerith's (or Aeris, pick your poison) death and the controversy it sparked? As much as it can make sense and the scene was quite well done (based on common reaction), how much of it was because gamers had not seen something like that before? Now if a game kills off major character it's either considered clich

And let's say CoD4 nuke at the end, to most gamers it was quite astonishing ("zomg teh nuke!!!111") because it wasn't done before, while someone who might know about war abit more could expect that when **** hits the fan there's possibility that nukes are going to fly around.

I wasn't astonished at all by the nuke, so much DEFCON, World in Conflict, C&C, Earth 2150 etc. has desensitized me =P

Nice one...vote with your wallets....;)

Even ****ing GTA4 lets you play offline, even after the install hassle with having to sign in to 2 diffrent services, product key and dvd in drive...geez.

So basicly they rule out everyone as customer that dont have internet OR a unstable connection. Crazy People...
