Empire Total War

I want a pike&musket era total war. But I'd settle with Rome2, or even Shogun2...

You might want to check out Lands to Conquer:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=302

It's got a Late Era campaign that starts in 1321, so should be perfect for pikemen and muskets, only trouble is it last only until 1450 I think. There's also one called Renaissance Total War, that focuses on that later era. And there's one about the English Civil War. Haven't played either of them so not sure how they play though...

Considering that Empire will go well into the 1800s, hopefully past the Napoleonic wars, it will have plenty of opportunity modding for instance the American Civil War, Zulu Wars etc. The problems come at the start of the 20th century when armies started to use less large formation tactics, and that will require a whole different approach for the battles.

Collectors Edition announced, includes 'elite units'.

29th October, 2008
Empire: Total War - Special Forces Edition!
In a time when a soldier’s life could be given easily and quickly, it took extreme courage and determination for a true hero to forge a reputation for themselves.

Whether through harsh and highly disciplined training, generations of successful military tradition or world-leading technology, the units available as part of the Empire: Total War Special Forces Edition are among the very best of the best.

The Special Forces Edition introduces six of the most influential military forces of the 18th Century. True to the period, these exclusive elite units become available on the campaign map via a certain faction or once a specific geographical region is under control.

Each elite unit brings with it the potential to open up dramatic new strategies and turn the tide of your campaign. A cornerstone of your Empire’s land or naval forces, each has the potential to be used to decisive and devastating effect.

The following elite units are included as part of the Empire: Total War Special Forces Edition. This premium packaged edition for aficionados of the Total War series comes complete with an illustrated campaign map and unique Steam unlock code. Once the game is installed and verified by Steam, players can enter their code and unlock these elite units which will then appear in the single player game.

HMS Victory:
The Royal Navy’s most distinguished and formidable first rate ship of the line; Lord Nelson’s 104 gun flagship is one of the most heavily armed ships of the 18th Century.

Rogers’ Rangers:
Major Robert Rogers’ company of rangers are highly trained elite light infantry, specialising in reconnaissance and special operations. They are extremely mobile in even the most challenging environments.

Ottoman Organ Gun:
A viciously powerful field gun, able to inflict incredible damage on the opposing army. Emphatic proof of the Ottoman Empire’s advanced knowledge of gunpowder and firearms technology.

Ghoorkas:
"Better to die than be a coward" has been the motto of these elite Nepalese soldiers for centuries. Disciplined, tough and courageous, they carry a deadly 18-inch long, curved knife known as the kukri.

Corso Terrestre Guerillas:
An independent light infantry guerrilla regiment, experienced in skirmish and stealth tactics. Surprise raids and ambushes are the guerillas’ favoured tactics, a way to compensate for their limited number and light armour.

Bulkeley's Regiment:
A French unit of Irish mercenaries with a fearsome reputation for hardiness. Exceptionally tough and resilient, they make for a highly flexible and dependable regiment.

Medieval Total War kind of dips into the Pike and Musket era by the end, but most of the combat you'll find in the campaign will be heavy on the knights and cavalry.

I tried to reenact the battle of the Thin Red Line at Balaclava, but unlike real life, the Russian commander didn't assume my force was just a diversion and rather than retreating, he pressed his attack. There were no survivors. :(

I assume they have valid reasons for that, so i don't really mind. Allows me to save up some money as well
Anyways, i hope the combat feels more like Rome again in terms of unit effectiveness.
Units in Medieval 2 seem so weak compared to those. Especially the archers dont do **** for damage, and the cavalry gets mowed down by some of the most simple soldiers available while they were the terror of the battlefield in Rome.
But generally all units in Rome seemed to do more damage. I wonder if the new fighting-animations Med2 uses have anything to do with it though.

And i wish they implement some of the battle complexety from the first Medieval again. I remember that that game had a lot more things influencing troop moral, wich Rome and Med2 both seem a bit to lack.
I played and own every Total War game there is, and i think i have to say that Shogun put a nice basis, Medieval added a lot to that. Then came Rome, wich was the best TW game so far in terms of atmosphere, but felt a bit simpler then Med. Can't remember if the units in Med1 were as effective as the units in Rome though.
Then comes Med2 and adds some new religion stuff, but lacks the pure atmosphere that Rome breathes (at least that is my personal opinion) and units feel fairly weak and as if they dont do what they are supposed to be good at. Kingdoms was a good expansion though, truely one that is worth your money.
But Rome is still the best one yet i think. I hope Empires comes closer to that game in terms of feel, especially combat-wise (not counting the tactics, ofcourse they will be totally different).
The fact the team that created Rome is making Empires instead of the team that made Medieval 2 makes me hopeful though.

Multiplayer campaign, oh sweet baby jesus :cool:
I sure hope it comes with the ability to save your campaign though :p
I wonder how long it will take before people have to give up their turn, i can see people spend 5 minutes easily in each turn.

a turn may take hours, with several battles in one turn, I dont think it will be that long wait for the other player til the action begins, it'll be probably five minutes for one to build stuf and units, but then spend a lot of time fighting battles with a separation of 20 seconds between them
