[Game] The "what are you currently playing?" thread #2

I just finished AC Freedom Cry, looking forward to AC Rogue and AC Unity.
Ubisoft goes the absolutely right way by finally portraying the other side - not the evil side - in a full price game. Sadly Call of Duty and all other shooter franchises have never yet allowed this. Those racists ...

I'm also largely looking forward to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and therefore have been playing BFMEII quite a bit recently.

Is the Freedom Cry worth playing? Any significant differences between it and the original AC IV? I finished the original campaign not too long ago, never really bothered to checkout the dlc.

Also, I finally got into DCS World. First few hours was a lot of struggling with the controls and tutorials, but after that I'm having really good time. Even got my friend in it as well:D

Freedom Cry is not an quickly made DLC like the short Aveline mission.
They did a great job in making the story believable and inspiring. Already in the main game I wanted to free the slaves whenever I raided a plantation. Now it is possible. :)
The sea map you have is much smaller than in the main game, maybe one fourth of it. The majority takes place on land anyways.
They composed new music for the game, very atmospheric as everything is trimmed on African culture. It features a total length of 9 memories which took me around 10-15h to complete as I collected everything and fully upgraded my ship.

I grabbed it in the summer end deals on PSN for about

It took me about 9 hours to finish. At first I liked it but I found the story to get dull towards the end. The map is small but still sizable, although I do not recall anything spectacular about the map. It does add the French in, which I recall brings slightly different enemy ship designs. Overall I disliked some mechanics of the game as a whole (garbage stealth mechanics, ect.) and I just got worn out and tired of it during the DLC. I much preferred the main game. But if you liked Black Flag a lot it is certainly worth getting.

As for DCS World, I hope you hopped on the recent sales which just ended yesterday. They were up to 70% off. Got Combined Arms myself.

Is there a completely new ship in Freedom Cry by the way? Or is it just retextured Jackdaw?

And yeah, I also bought combined arms. Bought Flaming Cliffs 3 too, which is absolutely amazing to be honest :D

It is essentially the same ship. In fact, I think it is the same ship gameplay/asset wise.

FC3 is certainly great. New flight model for the Su-27 coming in DCS World 2.0. Also a new map (paid :() which features Dubai. Good times for DCS. Combined Arms is actually fun to just mess around with.

I had an invite so I played it earlier. ;) It is okay. Similar to the original (only other one I played). While fun, the 3DS layout doesn't work so well with it IMO. It just isn't ergonomic for that kind of game. I do find it fun, but it isn't worth nearly $40 to me. I wish 3DS games were as cheap as PC games on sale. :p

Been playing some Rise of Nations Extended Edition on my laptop in hostels and such during rainy moments. I never played it before though it always sounded interesting to me, and bought it on a recent sale.
I like how familiar it feels as an Age of Empires-style RTS, yet is still different enough to really differentiate itself from the pack of other similarly styled games like Empire Earth etc.

In particular I like how the economy focusses on building different cities, and the setting up of trade routes between them. Each city can only have 5 farms, a single woodcutter building per forest, a single mine per mountain, and the size of these terrain features dictates how many people can work there. There are upgrade buildings that can increase the output of these resource buildings like a granary, woodsawing mill etc. which count only for the city they are in, and are limited to a single building per city, while they do house global tech upgrades. Resources don't run out which is good as well for long games, which got annoying in other games where I would clear-cut an entire forest and run out of resources eventually.
This means that in order to have the proper amount of resources, you need to expand and build more cities. The best way of getting gold is with trade caravans that move between the cities, and are usually limited to the amount of cities you have so you dont have an endless stream of caravans between two cities. It also means that each city needs to be built up, and some become 'specialised' in the sense that one city might not have a mountain nearby, and it becomes your primary income of wood. Another city on the coast will focus on getting fishing boats in the water, etc. This gives you some nice strategic points of attack that could cripple a certain area of someone's economy, instead of just a global overall dip in income.

Combat is pretty straightforward rock paper scissors stuff, but another big change is that you don't want to destroy all the enemy buildings that aren't military, because if you wreck the city centre you automatically capture it with infantry closeby, and that grants you ownership of all the economical buildings in the city limits. If you manage to hold on to the area, you can put in a ton of civvies and have a huge income boost. If you think you can't hold on to the area, you might raze the city instead without capturing it.
The only thing that I will have to get used to is the insane pace the game plays out at, you go through the ages it offers extremely fast. You can go from the Roman age to the industrial age in half an hour or so, if not faster.

Oh, and the campaigns are pretty interesting too. No narrative, but a big map of territories that need to be captures by fighting the RTS battles over them. Some give you tribute, others special resources, or even an extra army that can support an attack from nearby provinces.
During the missions you are even given certain choices that are scripted which are interesting. For example, while conquering a province there were three opponents, one of which were the Spartans. They offered me peace through a scripted moment after I wiped out everybody else, and I could accept it or decline it and wipe them off the map. I chose to accept the peace , and a few battles later the Persians I was fighting received reinforcements from the Spartans, who betrayed me and sought to partner up with a stronger force.
Highly enjoyable :)

Went on a new game binge since I've been sitting at home sick, and a new game is about the only thing besides sleep that distracts me from feeling crappy.

So I bought Mortal Kombat Komplete, Fear 1, 2 and 3 on the last day of the Warner Brother's bundle.

Beat Story Mode in MKK in about 8 hours. Shao Khan is an absolute mother ****er both times you fight him, and I had to cheese him in ways I've never had to cheese another MK game.

After all that, I sorta feel like it's actually one of the weaker remakes. They made such a big deal about Xray attacks despite each character having 1, and it being more or less the whole point of the power up system in fights. Sure, you can mod existing attacks for more damage and hits, break 1 combo if you have the juice for it, and at the pro level maybe that matters. For the average person though, it's really all about the Xray attacks. If you subtract out the POW system, it's really just another reskinned Mortal Kombat. I still do most of my work with good ol' "Jump Kick, Sweep Kick, Uppercut."

And I actually enjoyed the alternate weapon attacks from the previous title because it really mixed things up, and those are gone here, just leaving you with some Kombo moves where your guy flashes a weapon. A lot of the Kombos and attempts to empower an attack are all flaky too, so I have a hard time getting them to work. Still, there are some nice parts for it being a AAA title. The Challenge Tower makes for some nice solo replayability. There's a lot of mods to fights you can unlock that make them totally whacky.

Going to dive into F.E.A.R 2 today. I enjoyed F.E.A.R, just for the bullet time and environmental destruction. Hopefully those are still as good in F.E.A.R 2. For $5, it's going to have to suck pretty hard to disappointment me.
