Sheriff,of Lenark
Its Lanark :p, Brave Heart done more for Scottish tourism than its history tbh. We live in a backwater country and really don't know alot about those times or WW, most of what was in Braveheart was taken from Blind Harrys poem that was written 175 years after his death. Which if you believe what you read is mostly refuted by historians.

Unfortunately ,,,

Unfortunately ,,,

T.E.Lawrence,although born out of wedlock, attended Oxford, and had a tad of military training as well.
His expertise ,however was mostly On The Job Training,,,,at which he excelled.

Sometimes it is hard to distinguish, some political leaders, who then have a knack for military affairs,,,mostly they adhere to a Fascist frame of mind.

General Georgi,of the CCCP,was a avowed socialist, who distinguished himself,by not only having the sand to argue with Uncle Joe,but on the field as well.St.Petersburg ,Moscow,Kursk,Berlin, and of course this sites Holy Grail, the battle of Stalingrad. He was certainly not a fascist.

My initial choice, still stands,as possibly the best, especially when you consider he spent his own Zloty's on equipping his own brigade.....

A compulsion

A compulsion

Although this particular CHAP,had the finest of military training,,,,,,,,,and get this...once,,on a BBC interview show,he was asked to render his opinion on the three greatest military/field commanders in history. His response,,,,Alexander The Great,,,OLD BONEY,,,,,,,,,and finally,,,without even a blush,,,,he mentioned,,you are looking at him.

His name,General Sir,Bernard Law Monty........a person who established new standards in pomposity ,arrogance, and finally poor generalship and decision making.

I read his book,a "a History Of Warfare",encompassing some three hundred fifty pages,,,,,,an impossible feat,,,,even if scribed by Abe Lincoln, who was the best at getting to the gist of the matter,as economically as possible.

Not once,,,,,,not once,,,in his book,,did he mention,,Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne assault of WW11,designed to end the war by XMAS 44.The rest,,,,is known history.

Thetoad,does not wonder WHY,,,,,,,,,

On my part to the list. His time was the fourteenth century. He also ranks third on the all time list of conquered square miles catalogue.

Someone earlier mentioned the Great Khan,,,,who left his mark very prominently even in today's cultures.Every country ending In a Stan,,,was part of his empire,,,,like his own "Nabes",or turf, and believe me,,,,,,there are quite a few STANS about...

And now for your consideration,,,,,I present TAMERLANE..........
