The Rising Storm team are proud to present you with a little something to whet your appetites for the forthcoming Rising Storm expansion to Red Orchestra 2: a teaser video showcasing the Iwo Jima level. This map features the beaches and tunnels of the heavily defended 'home island' with its iconic landmark, Mt Suribachi. This is the first map-specific material to be seen and hints at some of the goodies and new features coming in Rising Storm.

It’s been a busy few months for the Rising Storm team, integrating our work with the public version of the recently released Red Orchestra 2 SDK and getting on board some top talent. New additions include the composer, Ben Hollway, who has worked on the music promoting this year’s Oscar ceremonies and with recording artists such as Devlin, and Harlan Glenn, who has worked in a research capacity for HBO’s ‘The Pacific’ and ‘Band of Brothers’ and as Pacific theatre researcher for both the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty franchises. The trailer itself features the special effects work of Richard Dawson, another new member of the team.

As you can see, with TWI’s support, this is a mod that is able to punch above its weight in terms of the quality of its crew. This is particularly so as RS has long been recruiting from the fertile gounds of the modding communities which grew up around TWI’s previous hits, Red Orchestra: Ostfront 1941-45 and Killing Floor. We do, however, still have openings for a couple more talented modellers to round off the ranks and applications can be made here.

Gorgeous trailer guys, very nice work I'm really looking forward to RS. I was going to sign up for beta, but decided not to - my connection is rubbish at home, and I ease that by downloading stuff to Steam at work and taking it home. I figure with regular build updates, that might not be so handy

Oh that's funny--I never realized that CoD's researcher was the same as The Pacific's... guess Treyarch must've overriden a lot of Mr. Glenn's input, as their version of the Pacific Theatre was, heh, interesting...

Pacific Theatre:
-- No mangrove swamp exists between the beach and the airfield.

--Japanese AA fire was virtually nonexistent after two days of bombardment--only a handful of Navy fighters were lost to enemy fire during the campaign.

--The Type 97 tank's cannon can only penetrate 25mm of steel plate, meaning the Shermans on the airfield level should have been virtually untouchable to the fire of its Japanese rival.

--An F4U Corsair attempting to drop bombs at the altitude depicted in “Hard Landing” would have destroyed itself with the blast concussion of its own ordnance.

--An M2 flamethrower holds only enough fuel for fifteen seconds of sustained firing before the tanks run dry. It also requires an assistant to release the nitrogen valve on the back as well as considerable strength to wield at 60 pounds of weight. Miller runs around with it like it's a Hello Kitty backpack

--Both Japanese commanders at Peleliu and Okinawa expressly discouraged the banzai charge as wasteful and ineffective compared to their favored strategy of a protracted defense-in-depth.

--The Type 100 submachine gun was only rarely encountered by American forces, being produced in extremely limited quantities. The 8mm ammunition was at any rate fairly poor in terms of stopping power.

--Marine NCOs never carried Browning Automatic Rifles as standard-issue small arms.

--No four-engined B-17 bombers were employed by the American forces at Peleliu, which relied on carrier airpower. As the island is of such a small square area, any attempt to do so after the landing of friendly forces would have been potentially massively fraticidal.

--No sane Japanese infantryman would ever attempt to scale trees to reach a firing position while in plain sight of the enemy.

--Almost no cover existed between the jungle immediately behind the airfield and the airstrip, forcing Marines to mount a charge across virtually bare coral.

--The Japanese had too few trucks left in working order on Peleliu to be able to afford suicidal mechanized attacks into the face of enemy armor with them.

--A bazooka, Panzershreck, or Panzerfaust cannot be fired in confined quarters or indoors, as the backblast would concuss or severely burn the operator.

--Extensive bombardment had turned both the Seelow Heights and Peleliu into a moonscape, rather than the lush forests/jungles depicted.

--The attack on the Point was completed on the first day of landings, before the airfield’s capture, totally without tank support, with the Marines involved being subsequently cut off for several days and nights and subject to fierce Japanese counterattacks.:IS2:

--The Japanese Type 96 Anti-Aircraft Gun has a maximum rate of fire of 260 rpm and feeds each cannon from a 15 round box magazine, contrary to both the scripted and player usable models in the game, which fire at an overly rapid rate and never exhaust their ammunition.

--Miller and his compatriots somehow avoid having to serve in the brutal battles over the Peleliu ridges, despite the fact that every Marine regiment serving on the island except the Eleventh Marines (an artillery unit) fought in the Umurbrogol Pocket

--The Marine Raiders at Makin actually outnumbered the Japanese garrison and had killed most of the enemy forces by midday. XD

--LCI-R rocket salvos are, like most rocket artillery, highly inaccurate for tactical support and suitable only for area saturation bombardment.

--Usage of the M7 rifle grenade launcher mounted on the M1 Garand required the removal of all live rounds, the insertion of one or more blank rounds, and the bracing of the rifle against the ground.

--Shuri Castle, before its capture, was shelled for three consecutive days by a New-Mexico class battleship, leaving it practically leveled.

--Japanese machine guns are often very poorly sited in-game, with narrow fields of fire and plenty of conveniently stacked equipment for enemy troops to take cover behind. Their emplacements are often poorly concealed as well.

--LCI-Rs required a long reload time of several minutes, far longer than the twenty second wait in-game.

--Combat on Okinawa and in the Peleliu ridges occurred at ranges far greater than depicted, with US soldiers often going days without seeing an enemy soldier.

--Using a flamethrower inside the confines of a tunnel would consume all available nearby oxygen, asphyxiating both the operator and the tunnel’s occupants.

--One properly aimed M1A1 Bazooka round would more than suffice to destroy or disable any Japanese tank of World War Two. On harder difficulties, you sometimes need two or three.

--Though inaccuracy number 13 mentions that heavy bombers did not bombard Peleliu after the invasion, even if they had participated, Type 96 anti-aircraft guns would be unable to threaten them at their typical operating altitude (even the lower height of Pacific bombing operations), and a crashed B-17 bomber with a full bomb load would have left an enormous flaming crater, not a practically intact fuselage and wings.

--Had the Japanese the number of fighter aircraft depicted in the Black Cats mission, they would have easily shot down two lumbering, unescorted PBY Catalinas, not that the Japanese didn't have far more dire needs for their remaining airpower. At this phase of the war, it is worthy to note that the Japanese did not have anywhere near enough air personnel trained for night flying, certainly not for massed formation night strike missions.

--Furthermore, had the Japanese succeeded in their attacks on the Okinawa invasion fleet to the degree shown in the mission, the entire operation would have been a costly failure for the US.

--And despite the constant, substantial threat of American submarine attack, Japanese cargo ships carry and use powerful searchlights at night, shining them in all directions, even from their patrol torpedo boats (which somehow have the range to be out in the open ocean!?).
