Allright then, final guess:

Inglis ANM2, in .303 cal, retrofitted with a stock and stuff.

Inglis is a Canadian firm that has made many of the comonwealth guns, mostly Browning patents, and where the main supplier of the .303 ANM2's fitted on british aircraft.

If it came from any comonwealth aircraft, its most likely the Inglis AMN2 .303 cal.

.30-06 and .303 is the same caliber i seem to recall, but if not, im still holding on an ANM2.

ANM2/MG40 is correct. 30-06 is the caliber...same as .303 I don't know.

This particular modification (nicknamed the Stinger) was preformed by a man named Sgt Grevich. He made 6 of them before he landed on Iwo Jima. One of them he gave to Cpl. Tony Stein, who was awarded the CMH for Valor on the Volcano Island. This Mod became quite popular from what I have read. 1350 rpm is a whole lotta love.
