[Game] Mafia II - Megathread

The cars look fantastic and the music is great, but is there any way to enable actual anti-aliasing?

It may be a DX10/11 thing as I get the option to enable it on Windows 7.

My PC is fairly beefy (quad core i7, GTX 480 GPU and 6GB DDR3 RAM), yet the demo bought my rig to it's knees during firefights when setting APEX/PhysX to high. Quality game though if you don't mind scrimping on the PhysX/APEX features in favour of smoother gameplay.

Well get over it already, cover system and health regeneration are standard since 2 years at least. That's like complaining about 3d graphics in 2000. And the cover system works perfectly, why would anything be bad about it in a 3rd person shooter?

Because it makes the game stale.
This system is not perfect, and i am annoyed by it. They make you immune to bullet fire almost completely unless it comes from your direct flank, but smaller angles than 90 degrees (ofcourse an exaggeration, but it gets the point across) seem to do less or no damage.
One perfect example of this is BIA: Hells Highway. Half of your body could be sticking out of cover but your magic cover system had been activated which means you cant get hit.
It turns the game into a very predictable and boring playstyle. Press the button, become immune, wait for your enemy to pop out of cover for a second and let rip. Rinse and repeat, et nauseum.
You barely get hit while most of the time you should have been.

Now, adding health regeneration on top of that makes modern shooters ridiculously easy.
The least they should have done is not use health regen with a cover system, because even if you make a mistake in a firefight and you take a bullet, it's no big deal.
It's way too forgiving, easy and it almost feels like cheating. Hence why i dont like these systems.
Why do you insist on me to like them?

Uhh BiA:HHs cover is destructible?

And what would the alternative be? Not only does the cover function look better(and that's the point of 3rd person games -> you see your character) but what is the point? Seriously, would you prefer to press crouch and sit infront of a desk and get hit in the head repeadidly? That's not realistic. And afaik Mafia2 does have some destructible cover too. And neither is the game easy, some people complained about getting killed repeadidly in the mission. Happened to me to, I respawned about 3-4 times in the elevator because I wasn't in cover. That's much more realistic than anything else you can have here.

Downloading demo now. What's this about unlimited free roam cause a 10min limit for a 1gig+ demo is retarded.

Btw health regen isnt perfect but for a game like this it beats scrambling to magical health powerups and bandages. I'd rather pretend to believe I was just grazed rather than have instant medical miracles every few minutes.

You're not immune to bullet fire, that's for sure. 2-3 or just one unlucky hit and you're down.

The driving is excellent even on a keyboard, but I'm disappointed at how severe the performance hit is with PhysX, I'll be missing all of those flowing coats and whatnot. It might not have been so bad if every single object didn't break into a million pieces. It's very close to playable with it on medium, though. AA works but is overridden by post-processing at a certain distance. As for the guns, they handle great but the sounds could be a lot better, kinda the same issue they had in the first game. The old "pop-pop-pop" of a Tommy Gun gets a little tiring after a while.

Can't wait to get the full game though. The story is sure to be excellent.

I'm pretty impressed with it. Looks great and runs well. Characters are interesting and pretty authentic sounding. The time period was a fantastic choice and there are a few WWII references in dialogue and in the scenery which is nice. Turning on AA kills performance but due to the slight blur they put on everything at a distance it doesnt look much different with it off. Haven't tried it with PhysX but I expect that to kill fps as well. Textures and models are superb. Sound effects are no BC2 but suitable. Gameplay feels right with smooth interaction and gunplay mechanics.

As long as there isn't any overbearing DRM and the full game lasts a good amount of time this shall be a purchase.

One thing they kept from the first game that pleased me was the police re-act to idiotic driving, so speeding or running a red light and they'll stop you and issue a ticket.

Compared to GTA where you can race around at top speeds, smash everything in sight and the police drive by like you're a model citizen.

Yes, mafia 1 was an amazing game, shame it has HORRIBLE pop ins though.

I downloaded the Demo of this, won't run cause of a Physx error and I cannot uninstall physx because of another error D:.
Doubt I'd be able to run it anyway, Minimun is a Pentium D 3Ghz, I have a Pentium D 3.2Ghz.
Seems to run best with a dedicated GFX card for physx apparently.

I have to agree with those who said the gameplay feels generic. Mafia 2 doesn't seem to offer anything gameplay wise that is new, innovative, or different from any of the other open world games (mainly referring to GTA4) that came before it. Outside of the setting (which is very well done) there is no feature that I saw in the demo which would make me choose this game over any other.

Granted, 10 minutes is a ridiculously short amount of time to explore, so outside of the gun shop what else is there? I mostly had a running gunfight with the cops. And please don't say looking for porn mags, I hate looking for random useless objects which give you nothing in return for the time spent finding them (200 birds R*? Why?).

I know I tend to write of only the negative side so I will give some praise as well. The graphics and atmosphere are incredible. It truly has that "undefinable quality" of the era that sucks you right in, more so than GTA4 and RDR.

Okay, after playing a couple of hours, here are my impressions, and I'm a huge fan of the original Mafia. My main interest in Mafia II was for the atmosphere and portrayal of the decade, not any interest in the Mafia, so I have focused mainly on that.

Pros:

-Excellent music, and although limited, I suspect this is because it's a demo.
-The car design is greatand fits the era very well.
-The city feels alive with numerous pedestrians doing different activities.
-Some of the visual effects, such as fire and crumbling walls.
-Surprisingly the Playboy magazines, although the issues in the demo are from the 1960s.

Cons:

-While the music and cars are great, I feel like I'm playing a satirical view of the 1950s and not an accurate portrayal of the decade. The radio announcer makes it too obvious that things like color television and portable telephones seemed surreal at the time, like we're supposed to laugh because everyone has a cell phone and credit card now. There are also too many obvious slights against women and rock and roll, which weren't actually thrown in your face all the time. After awhile I couldn't help but think, "Yeah I get it already." I was kind of worried that Mafia II would become Grand Theft Auto in the 50s with all the obvious pop culture jokes and satire.
-The comments made by the cops are repetitive and a bit too aggressive and vulgar. I also don't feel compelled to follow the law as I did in Mafia.
-Visual effects such as the police lights and headlights.
-The heavy post-processing and vibrant colors.
-Accidents are too often and are generally caused by quirks in the AI.

This is one thing I also didn't care for. The whole speech on the radio about cigarettes and the cigarette companies looking out for the customers was cliche and bordering on cheesy. It immediately comes off as being a facet stolen from GTA and not funny or necessary. It's not so terrible as to ruin the experience but I'd much rather have 100% authentic dialogue. At least the music is fantastic.

Of course it's cheesy, it's not a documentary.

Sorry lol this argument makes no sense. Why isn't Goodfella's or The Godfather cheesy? They aren't documentaries. Why don't soldiers in RO quip about how they wish they had futuristic gas powered assault rifles? It isn't a documentary. When the rest of the game is at least somewhat authentic, why do modern social commentary? Just a bit out of place.

I guess you guys lived in the 50s and knew what it was like on a day-to-day basis? Old ads and things like that were always over the top. That's just classic salesmanship.
