Mods work on Steam games.

No, mods work with most games on Steam, but certainly not all, there are games where the Steam integration has broken the mod support, i belive this is the publishers/developers fault for making a half-arsed Steam version, and not an inherent problem with Steam itself, but the end result is the same, stuff like this makes people hesitant to buy games from Steam, atleast untill they know for sure if the Steam version is fully functional or not.

you have to do weird stuff to get some Medieval 2 mods to work with the steam version

Having reinstalled Mafia again I have to say it has aged quite well actually, and it's still as awesome as it was back when it came out. It is one of the few games where almost every mission is memorable.

Thing I enjoyed about Mafia and to some extent the Driver games was that it was relatively straight faced, had a strong interesting story and characters and well choreographed missions.

The problem I have with GTA (less so GTA:IV) is it feels like I'm being constantly hit around the head with the lampooning of films/music/culture and the general comedic undertone and it begins to wear thin after a while. San Andreas is the worst for this as they didn't know when to say stop, it's just a bloated mess.

Apart from the Driver series which fell apart with Driver 2 and 3 (although 'Parallel Lines' was surprising good) Mafia is the only alternative to GTA.

Mmm I was expecting more. Just a demo though, but I don't think I'll buy this on release. I know people hate when compared to GTA4 and this is a demo after all, but the whole wow feeling wasn't there compared to GTA4.

It ran good, music was good and voice acting was good. Seems like interesting story, but I'm not so sure about the gameplay :(. Hopefully the full game won't be so much about shooting.

My thoughts so far after one playthrough:

Graphics -> A W E S O M E ...
Open World -> You only have a small area of the city in the demo but from what I've seen this is not only the most beautiful, but also the most alive open world I've ever seen in a game ... however we'll see how interactive it is. Original era playboy magazines are awesome and fit really well into the scene but there's too much useless interaction like flushing the toilets etc. which kinda gives the feeling they just added that to give the impression of big interaction possibilities.
Driving physics -> Nice, cars feel heavy

Up to that point I thought that this game has very good GOTY chances. Then came the mission however.

While I could imagine that the characters may grow to you after some time and that it's actually a major strongpoint of the game, I didn't really give a **** about those guys but then again it was a short demo so that was to be expected. But I didn't like the overall design of the mission, too much shooting imo. I hope that doesn't go through most of the missions because while the cover system works great and weapons feel ok(but should feel much stronger still), it would become boring very soon.(like GTA4s missions to some extent).

So in conclusion so far I have no doubt that this will be a very good game, but whether it's going to be a fantastic / GOTY-chance game will depend on how the other missions are structured and how much substance there is to the characters.

I'm not sure yet.
I can respect the detail they put into the world and the atmosphere is there sure enough, but i'm put off by the fact it's yet again another third person shooter with a magic cover system and health regeneration. It's getting so old right now, it makes it feel like every other game out there.
The combat doesnt feel fresh or like a game into itself, despite everything they've done for the world and the story and the characters.

Well get over it already, cover system and health regeneration are standard since 2 years at least. That's like complaining about 3d graphics in 2000. And the cover system works perfectly, why would anything be bad about it in a 3rd person shooter?

I have to agree though that in combat it does feel kinda generic but imo that doesn't come from the fact that they did not oversleep the new developments of the last 5 years but that there seems to be so much focus on killing 498539 enemies like in GTA4 instead of more creative missions or different ways to solve mission(as in fight or sneak or by dialogue).

Maybe it's too early to judge the missions just yet especcially as they probably wanted to show off some action in the demo as well, but in GTA4 it was the same so I'm careful.

IT HAS FLUSHABLE TOILETS :D

Think I'll definitely be picking this up.

Demo was very fun, one thing though is that I felt that in the 2nd cutscene in the demo (where you meet up with the other two guys) the voice acting just seemed off.

I haven't played the demo yet, it's currently downloading, but I would just like to input that the demo of the original Mafia was from the mission at the car garage, which was mostly shooting and didn't even introduce who Paulie and Sam were. So hopefully the same thing is going on here, but I could be wrong.

Edit: What I mean is that hopefully there's just a lot of generic action for demo purposes.

They make it quite clear that the demo level isn't in the full game at all, so more than likely it was just spliced together to showcase a lot of action for the demo.

Free roam is fun and in fact, there's a way to have unlimited time instead of the 10 minutes they give you... :D
