This question crossed my mind after reading zogthedommed's thread here:

We've seen the game's WIP screenshots shown to date, and the Stalingrad environment is certainly looking stellar, the question is how limiting will the maps be by presenting this Rattenkrieg Close Quarter Combat? As CQC is also the standard fare of most run & gun shooter games today, I hope the maps in HEROES won't work to limit gameplay to the Rat-Maze only type gameplay.

(a shamelss pandering to see more map previews) ;)

That's excellent [TW]ohnein, and thank you for your reply!

I suspect that many shooter games today have gravitated to these Rat-Maze type maps because their limited FOVs boosts game performance, allowing scaling to the console platforms and to more PC systems. For this reason I suspect that this run & gun arcade gameplay evolved not only because gamers *liked it*, but because programmers could code for more players into MP, and more events in SP by limiting our in-game views.

I'm looking forward to seeing how TW balances the desire for efficient processing along with decent drawing distances, and with the wants for variety within the upcoming HEROES maps too.

Thanks again for the input.

The game certainly won't be limited to rattenkrieg style combat. We want to capture the different locations and scenarios throughout Stalingrad.

Nice to know. I think most us of get scared that game developers sooner or later sale out for COD/CS:S type games with spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn rinse and repeat with nerfed weapons and both teams being balanced. Oh, and with zero realism in mind.

I hope we get at least a couple Kryokovo type maps. I know many dislike that map but personally I always found the long range bolting to be very fun, as well as when a clump of soviets would manage to get a break through going and push the Germans out of their trenches and foxholes :).

And perhaps some of the desperate bridge defenses (outside the city itself I mean) with scratch forces the Germans put up during the encirclement. Some maps of the infantry assaults in the open on the Romanian positions in the opening of Op. Uranus would be nice too.

Really Stalingrad and the whole surrounding battle going on covers such a huge area the devs and modders afterwards could make recreations of almost every conceivable scenario.
