There were a lot of Uzbeks, Kirghiz and Kazakhs fighting in Stalingrad. These people, in my experience, generally look pretty much halfway between Chinese/Mongolian and Europeans.
There were also a lot of Georgians, Armenians and Azerbaijanis - these people often resemble Sicilians or Greeks or even Iranians in terms of features and skin colouring.
There were a lot of Soviet troops in Stalingrad, in general, who hardly spoke any Russian at all - particularly the Uzbeks.
