Snail carousel on Steamland

a friend and I were wondering why snails were used on the carousel and why they didnt choose any other animal or bug/insect.

Snail is the default movement speed for characters, and the carousel represents the characters moving around the map with no way to escape.

They should have put an extra snail on the carousel that had a katana and went around twice as fast as the other snails and if you got really close to the carousel all the slow ones are going 'op op op op'
