I highly recommend berserk anime.
Once you are done watching that series, you might want to get the Manga Episodes (comic books) because they are far more detailed...

It is one of the best... Highly recommended...
A lot of Gore and Violence, fantastic story and great characters.

Kenshin series are also very good but overall contains too much goody goody goodness... great morals...

There is also Trust And Betrail witch explain Kenshin's life before turning into a wanderer.

Completely batsh!t crazy, great fun to read, also quite violent. Also set in New York and is actually not too skewed. Has anime and manga adaptations.

I recommend Planetes. Story: Everyday life of garbagemen... IN SPAAAAACCCCCEEEEE! Sounds boring? Well, it is not. It's actually very interesting. Granted, a bit of scifi nerdism is needed, but not much. Excellent scifi drama.

But talking about recommendations, I recommend Hellsing. It has more or less gore, it has nazis and vampires (and nazivampires) in it and one of the most egoistic main character in existence.

The only thing most of those series are about is bigtitted girls with big innocent eyes for the yaps to wank on.
Regular manga and Hentai arent that far apart from eachother really.
It's amazing how many girls actually dig that crap when most of them want to emancipate, yet love the exploitation of the female body in anime
