There is this show on ABC here (from BBC UK) called horible historys.

I sometimes watch it if it is on.. but i watched a few youtube ones and found this stalingrad one..

I found similar story about cutting legs of Russian soldier with boots by Germans in Nikolai Nikulin memories titled Soldat (unfortunatelly there is no English translation at this moment). Soviet syberian troops got the order to capture village secured by numerous Wehrmacht forces. They used skies but heavy fire of MG slaughtered them in open field. At dusk Germans cut limb of dead men and unfreezed them in sauna to retake warm boots. Disguisting story but that is nature on the war...

Russian Winter helped, always has, i was always more curious as to how much though, Stalingrad is on lower latitude, so i would assume the winter is not as bad there as Moscow or leningrad, how much by im not sure.

Tyranny of distance was the real killer, Russians had hardly any supplies at all from the volga as it went all to the encirling units in operation uranus, all the way through that battle.
germans went from good supplies to zero in a matter of a month with the encirclement, that is alot less sustainable than the little the russians had across the volga, and then fighting on 2 fronts..impossible task. The germans where ferocious too, you dont stay for 6 months...850,000 dead germans tell a diffrent story i imagine.

There was this other show,four wheels across russia recently, started in Sochi, but he went to stalingrad and in that part he talks to people there about the war .. worth watching.

Yes, the Russians also faced a harsh winter... the difference - quite frankly - is that they had more than summer uniforms (grey coat =/= winter gear btw.. before someone says that), enough food and ammunition.
