Are they replacing anything on the AC-130? Because each of those serves a distinct purpose.
The bofors is already a 40mm cannon (wheras this is 30mm) and they're not 25mm chainguns but rather 20mm gattling guns. I couldn't see this AAAV cannon being so much better than both of those combined to justify replacing them.
Yeah they are replacing them. I believe its going to be the AC-130U. The 40mm bofors is getting to be very hard to find parts for. According to the wiki article two Mk 44 Bushmaster 30mm cannons are replacing the 25 mm GAU-12/U and 40 mm Bofors with plans to replace the howitzer with a breech loading 120mm mortar and to give it standoff capability http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC-130#Upgrades
