As a gamer you just can't read German newspapers atm. They're all freaking out. Politicians, authors, all of them. And I'm not talking about Bild or other yellow press media. I'm talking about the so-called serious newspapers. I was just reading the Sueddeutsche Zeitung and they're really full of it. What's even worse is that they aren't even trying to be objective or listen to the gamers. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. They apparently read some CSS forums where people spoke right out of my heart by saying things like "CSS isn't so much about playing an actually violent scenario as it is about tactics, reflexes, key combos". And waht was their response? "That's an absurd argument."
Yeah right, you say someone's freaking out killing people only because of a GAME but you call the above an absurd argument.
What's also very upsetting is that they still think gamers are some kind of sub-culture, comprised of a select few freaks. I mean almost EVERY male in my age I know has played or still plays computer games on a regular bases. And 90 per cent of them play first person shooters. We're not a sub-culture, computer games are a mass medium like TV!

Then they show a picure of Doom 3 with that baby-demon-monster. Implying we as gamers had fujn killing babys. It's like showing someone who has never seen "The Excorcist" the scene where the little girl says "**** me" repeatedly to the priest. Of course it's disgusting, but for Christ's sake it is a horror movie. It's meant to shock and scare you. I remember the late 80s when they were allover horror movies or even stuff like Terminator, saying it would cause violent behaviour or train your killing instinct. Everyone would laugh if I'd say that now. We can also go back further to the 70s and "satanic" rock music.
The really sad thing is, the same generation that was listening to Black Sabbath back then acts now all hyterical when they see Counterstrike players making headshots.

Let's face it. We're most probably about to get a new/modified law restricting first person shooters even more than they are now. Even now I can't play ROOST completely uncensored, in a year I might not be able to get a game like that at all.:(

Yeah, you sometime get that here in the states with violence. Back when I was growing up, it was Heavy Metal Music. Everyone remember the court case blaming Judas Priest for some teenager's suicide? Seems they just want to blame something they either don't like or don't understand instead of finding out the true cause, such as (and this is just an example) bad/abusive parenting.

hm, lol, yes. its every massacre the same thing, i just laugh about them.

the reason i woud bring up is the eletist soceity that we build up. everyone has to be the best and the people below a certain standart or wont swim with the stream get sortet out and forgoten. a couple of years ago there where enugh jobs and possibilities for everyone to get a job and has his things sorted out. today you need to have such and such high qualifications to get a job its just giving the low average people no chance.

the jobs that where originaly available for the lower average are now filled by foreign companies that work for an apple and a egg.
that is not the companys fault, its a economical decision and i would prohably do the same. i do blame it at the politicans that just sceam "globalize, globalize" and dont realize the long term effects.

futuremore its wanted that both parents are working by our politicans, no wonder the childs flee into games and forget to build up a social competence in the early years. so theire not able to get a stable personality and handle frustration a healty way.

bottom line at blaming it at "violent" games is that there where school massacres before them. for example in 1964 a guy walked in a school with a flamethrower (sorry only in german available).

also sorry for politics here, but whatever discusion on that topic works without?

Kinda glad I live in the UK really, as the government is pretty relaxed about it now.

I remember when Carmageddon and Grand Theft Auto came out alot of people freaked out over the violent nature and that. But then six months later, when we didn't have 12 year olds pulling you outta your car, beating you then driving off leaving a trail of dead school kids and old people in their wake, people actually realised that video games are less of a threat to the public than fireworks.

Aside from the video nasties era, british censorship is actually quite relaxed.

Remember my German mate *****ing back in the day about the Soldier of Fortune games lol (they still banned over there btw?)

Yup, pointing the finger at games/music/youth culture is always the surest sign of lazy journalism and knee-jerk vote-grabbing.

Imagine you are a busy journo or editor with a deadline to meet. A family is killed by a psychopathic loner who had a whole host of complicated social problems in his life and, possibly, a chemical imbalance in his brain. He also, like many people, plays CS.

Do you, as a journalist, write a piece entitled, "Family slain by loner with a history of social problems and possible chemical imbalances in his brain" or do you write a piece called "ZOMFG CS Nutter zaps family!!!eleventeen1!!"?

The rise of the soundbite is to blame for the style of journalism and the style of politics which reduces everything to this level.

They say they have shorttime studies that prove that playing violent games makes you more aggressive for a short amount of time. Sounds reasonable? Of course, because you are on much higher concentration level when playing insta-gib UT or Quake 3 than when you are playing Rollercoaster Tycoon. That has nothing to do with the violence in the game though.

At least they admit that they don

well our politicans ( i am german, too) always want to discuss everything in a "professional" way. but if it comes to thinks like that they just want to ban the games out of our country. i cant support such a politic. i remember, about 10 years ago it was the tv, they said the kids just sitting in front of tv, they become aggresive cause of horror movies etc.

they dont even got any good argument against games. in fact, 90% of the young people already played or still plays computer games. they are no problems in other countries, are they? we got the blood censored, the signs which where abused by the national socialists like the germanic Sig Rune, the modified swastika (hakenkreuz) and so on... your (uncensored!!) games are for 16 years(??) old. in germany they are forbidden. they are censored and approved for 18 years. thats total ****. an adult can decide what he/she want to see and what not.

i am happy to bought the english version, it improves the atmosphere.

other example: if got the english version of RTCW. am i a nazi now cause i see the signs? NO...

excuse my english, i am a bit upset ;)

Waw...

Germany sounds pretty strict on Videogames....

I guess living in Canada is pretty different...

There are pro's and con's in every different location.

Yet I do think Germany should learn to relax a bit more when it comes to videogames...

Recently, In Canada, there was a school shooting in Dawson College.
One of the most popular public Colleges that we have...

Yes, they did say that the insane kid, the shooter played Counter-Strike lol... however... they mostly put the blame on the Goths...

Gunner was a goth... and they visited a forum that retard visited and there were other retarded forum members that were saying that its good, student hunting...

Some people are disturbed... have serious issues...

They don't need a videogames to kill... Sure it does not help... but the fault is mostly the parents who failed the child as parents... or maybe the person was simply borned with serious issues...

That was a very nice long post and a good read (I didnt quote it all because its pretty long)

My question is... (because I am an ignorent Canadian :p)

Is there still such a thing as a Pro-Nazi like party in the government ??????
Please excuse me if I read this wrong, or if there is sarcasm that I missed...
Anyone supporting a Nazis should be thrown in a Strict school that teaches LOVE and Life values... if they fail... throw them in Jail or something...

Someone please educate me on this because I know I must be wrong somewere in what I understood.
No, there are a couple of pro-Nazi partys but none of them is in the government and I don
