This game has only one thing that frustrates a dedicated and determined sniper. Limiting by map and the number of snipers.

Most game players have a favorite or choice role or weapon and when it is not available enjoyment of the game is diminished.

I find in every other war game I play that weapons choices and roles are self limiting and does not require a forced limitation by some programers choices and not player choices. You will never find a abnormal number of snipers in most games unless someone sets up a room or host all snipers or any other role. Only a few players prefer this slow paced role over run and gunning for high score.

Most games where there are 24 plus players maybe three or so players will choose sniper role or weapon. This is player choice limitation and not programmers choices.

Why not at least test no limit roles and see if it really goes to far our of balance. Or let the host set number or players per role not eliminating any.

The sniper scope and the requirement to operate the bolt is a added difficulty not found in some games.

Try on a couple of maps just for the players who come to play and their role choice is taken. I keep hearing that it is about the players enjoyment of the game more than how realistic it is.

I have tried to follow the sniper and pick up the weapon when he pulls a dumb ass but I can not pick it up.

If you want to wonder what unlimited classes are like, play Koitos1944. For some reason, the author that ported the map to Ostfront made the Germans able to have unlimited Squad Leaders. It's a small urban map, so nearly every damn German runs around with an MP-40 hosing the rubble with parabellum rounds at every opportunity.

The classes are limited because they are not equal. I have suggested that they be equalized a bit, but the devs and most of the community are not interested.

In any case, this is purely a map designer's decision. So if you want unlimited snipers, build a map and set it up that way.

personaly i would love to see a all sniper map something huge with plenty of good sniping spots just so people that dont normaly get to snipe can try them and realize they arnt the god weapons of most other games. I have a fairly fast computer and can get the sniper class 90% of the time when i want it but i normaly dont pick it just because its not the best weapon in most cases. Maybe someone will make a huge sniper only map and give people the chance to play them. I really want to see a map where your always shooting at people that are 600m or more from you 90% of the time. However... unlimited snipers on the normal maps i dont think would be a good idea. you get a bunch of snipers on one side no objectives would be taken ever. its hard enough getting people to move in with rifles and smgs let alone snipers.

No Class limits? We would have 16 MG42s on Odessas last objective that could give each other ammunition. Would be really funny for the russians...

And sometimes 1 Sniper in the team that overdoes his job (i.e. doesn't move the whole game) is 1 man lost for the team (capturing, defending). I would hate to see 5 snipers, where at least 3 or 4 are really bad and just take it for the "lolz, snipz000rz"-factor

Perhaps one should get past the notion of being a "dedicated and determined sniper" and try to become a well-rounded player. If you're already well-rounded, then just accept that the game has class limits and learn to live with it. It's not going to change.

If you want an all-sniper map, you can always make one yourself and see how well it plays on servers and how many servers play it. I suspect most wouldn't run it because it'd totally kill the flavor of gameplay we have now.

I came to RO from Forgotten Hope which, while a lot of fun, does not include class limits (except in the form of pickup kits). Whatever class is the optimum class for a given job or at a particular point in a map is always the class most people take. Got a map with tanks? Take the class that can drive tanks, drop high explosives, and has a long-range weapon to use over the pistol-packing tank driver or the dedicated AT-class. Got a map that's all close combat? Grab an SMG trooper and forget the longer rifle.

Trust me, class limits are a good thing. If you're really seriously hankering for a sniper rifle, you can always try buying more RAM so you load faster. Or, like you said, follow the sniper around and wait for him to die (while giving him cover).

I nominate this as one of the worst suggestions ever, lol hahahahahahaha come on man! Snipefest41-45 would be the new game title after that idea. Why not learn & use ALL the weapons/different play strategies like me and many others that way when the sniper is taken you can happily destroy opponents with any another weapon. Versatility is your friend. I understand the sniper mentality/playstyle as I snipe myself, BUT other roles are extremely satisfying too in different (but equally fun) ways. If you REALLY must only play sniper just wait till a slot opens or pick one up off a dead friend or enemy. A little tip about weapon pickup: you have to drop your current weapon to pick up a different one (which will be changed in new patch)

RO models a typical company that fought on maps. So, it tries to keep the map's weapon/specialist ratio to it's real counterpart as close as possible. It would be really stupid if a map like Odessa has 10 sniper, 5mg's per map. And no, I'm against it should be a server side option.

This is one of the "core realism" parts of RO, that should not be touched.

The 1 Sniper Per team Rule sounds fair enough, but I hate how the first people who join get sniper! Its unfair, and players never get to be a sniper. I think they should ban the sniper class the first 2-3 minutes of the game, and then you can pick after. That would allow most of the players to join, and now people have a chance of being a sniper!
