I'm curios to see what people have made since ROs custom mapping community moved on. I know some have gone to the sourceSDK seeing as they have a large mapping/mod community while others stuck with the new and improved unreal editor.

Anyway please post pics, so we can imagine whats to come with HOS's release.
 
This is a map i am working on for the MSUC Contest.
this is my first try at custom textures and I might add some custom staticmeshes. I dont know yet.

Have you tried making normal maps? :f
Because I suck at them (unless I just use crazybump).

I have used them with some good result and some bad. Still learn to
improve the result. For the wall I use Shadermap pro a similar program
as Crazybump. If i'm good informed they are named high frequency normal maps. The program cost me $ 20 so its cheap.

For some of the models i tried to bake them in 3D Max. Sometimes the result
is amazing. Sometimes not :D

Here some of the results with normal maps baked in 3D Max
Unlitted the barrel look flat. With the light it shows more detail.



Some result with A ladle.



Its fun learning all this and have some result. But the road is long and take much time. My wife must love me very much. :)
I also tried a bumpoff set. Its like the bricks have more depth then.

lol, I made them in the Speedtree modeler :p

I can't take much credit for the actual trees, I just tweaked the pine tree that came with the Speedtree modeler, which in turn came with UDK. I don't think you can import these speedtrees into Rohos editor :\

The leaf/needle textures look smooth because the newest UDK build has a new blendmode for transparent materials. It's called soft mask: http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/SoftMasked.html

But it seems that it's buggy on PC at the moment, but I haven't had any problems in that scene yet.

Great screenshot nice bright sky.

Except for the factoryfloor I did made all textures myself.
Most source material is from cgtextures.com .
Also used othe internet images. With photoshop
I gave it an own look. Blending in other textures.

I would like to know how they deal with interior areas in RO HOS.
As i would make a wall/building with meshes and the inside area could
use bsp for hallways,workshops and rooms.

Finding a photo of the heather was a tad... difficult.
And it's just one smesh and one texture, repeating can be a bit obvious atm :F
But anyway:
The mip-maps of those textures are rather crappy atm, you can notice a black halo around the plant at lower mip levels. Gotta tweak it.
Also the alpha-map is very crappy and quickly done :\

I guess I'll have to wait for summer and take my own pics against a proper background then.

I'm shooting for something like this:

You have plenty of woods in Finland :D

When you look around in some present blockbuster games you will notice
many crappy looking things. And still they sell good and the majority of the
people think it looks superb. Isn't it the best to find the balance in good
looking and less goodlooking things.

Its important to create an illusion. The illusion it looks great. ;)

Nah, I haven't. The tiling is because I made the trees in the Speedtree modeler. I wanted them to have grey bark closer to ground and then that red bark in the upper parts of the trunk. But the stripped down Speedtree modeler for UDK doesn't support that I think.

But in Max I think I could just use one bigass texture and then blend it with a closeup detail-normal map. But if I made the trees in Max, they wouldn't sway in the wind :\
Everything in that scene moves with the wind, looks quite nice imo with full scene dynamic lighting, even though it floors my fps... About 40 fps at 1920x1200 res. Shame that it isn't faster.

Do you know any good plugins for max? I'm not into the plugin scene that much, I don't even know where to start looking :p
