Thanks for the feedback.

The board is an nforce2 board and the appropriate drivers were installed right after windows install / SP2 was done torturing the HD, so to speak. They're the 5.10 drivers from the nvidia.com website for nforce 1/2 chipset.

This windows install is about 96h old as of right now, since i got my hands on some "newer" parts on saturday.

See, the kicker is still that i can run the unpacked RO V1000 just fine, it's just the "official" RO V1001 which runs through steam and .gcf files which is acting up this way. I'm in the process of downloading RO again now through steam after having uninstalled my previous Steam completely including deleting the .gcf files just to rule out any errors in these files as well.

I'll update as to whats happening once it's done. If all else fails, I'll bite the big one and install a 2nd WinXP on another HD and see if that works

Uninstalling Steam and installing anew as well as redownloading RO didnt work either....i'll unpack the redownloaded RO V1001 .gcf files now and see if it does the same thing then also...if not, well that'll leave one 3rd party application....

edit:
Ok, it's not Steam either, it's with RO V1001. Unpacked and started, stare at menu for 30 secs and freeze...

Exactly the same for me. I've reinstalled both steam and the game and no luck. The only thing i don't think i've looked at is my motherboard drivers (i'll do this when i get home). I'm not sure if it will be them through as my mobbo is only 2 months old and it was a fresh install of windows and all drivers updated at that time aswell. No harm in double checking though.

Just to add my board is a gigabyte nf3.

Concerning my freezes/lock-ups issues:

While I'd still like to have somebody analysing the RedOrchestra.log file in the very first post of this thread, I think it was the WindowsUpdate utility that was messing with my comp and RO...

I'm not completely sure about it but things definetely go better since I 'nuked' its running processes with HijackThis.exe...

Well, unfortunately theres nothing really out of the ordinary with your .log file. The interesting stuff would be at the end of the file, but since RO is keeping the computer busy on such a grand scale with crashing (hrhr) RO doesn't even get to finish logging whats going on. The interesting parts would be marked with "log: Critical: etcblahblahblah"

All that other stuff in there right before it stopped logging seems pretty normal, drawing on experience with aao logfiles using same engine etc. Stuff not found and so forth, all pretty normal

So yeah, it's me again...

..just got done installing another winxp pro. After xp & SP2 were done I did the nforce drivers, after that the video drivers after that steam and then..uh..wait, thats it.

I didn't even change any settings such as AA&AF etc in the video driver.

I then checked RO V1001 unpacked and it runs fine...

Checked RO V1001 Steam and it freezes......... :(

Running out of options...

btw. why is RO using 99% CPU when im staring at the menu right after the startup trailers, but in-game with stuff going on including bots its somewhere between 70-90% "only" ?

The audio? I just spent about an hour playing offline with the unpacked version with a fresh winxp install about 12h old (2nd) which has only the nvidia drivers installed (graphics & mainboard) and WDM sound drivers while using Teamspeak.

If i try the same with the Steam version even without using Teamspeak and with this same windows xp install it keeps freezing...

I'm trying to find out if i can run the unpacked version with Steam as well like a retail CD install

The only reason i asked is that i have access to 4 pc's two with xp pro two with xp home. Both the xp home computers run this game fine but both xp pro computers give the same crash/freeze problem. I'm not sure what or where the conflict is but just wanted to see if other users had the same problem with xp pro.

Hm, what are the major differences between pro and home? my win2k was also a pro.

btw. i spent about half an hour playing now through steam, sitting through the initial freeze ups, but game/steam recovered, so i was able to play. Then it froze and looped sound and finally rebooted comp...

Well I guess I can add my freezing up woes to this thread.

Downloaded the game from Steam, ran it and when I get to the screen where you can choose which side you want to fight for I get a feedback sound from my sound card and the computer freezes up. I have to hard boot to get the computer started again.

I've gone through everything listed throughout the tech support forums. I've followed the steps outlined for those that can't start the game at all. I've lowered hardware accelaration for both sound and video. I've defraged with Diskeeper, readjusted my page file. I've been at it since 8:00AM this morning, now 5PM with a 3 hour break:D.....and I've only had it run fine for about one hour, then...it froze. Then when I try to get back into the game it freezes again:mad:.

System temps are good, I've got the following system...no overclocks:
AMD A64 3000 754pin with a Zalman Cu Cooler.
X800XL ATI card AGP with a Zalman fan.
Soundblaster Audigy ZS card, but I've also turned that off and used my Terratec EWX24/96....BTW I've disabled sound and I still get freeze up.
DFI Nforce3 250Gb Mobo.
1.5G PC3200 Crucial Memory
80G Maxtor IDE 7200 drive/250G Maxtor SATA drive

All the drivers are up to date. The computer plays IL2 Forgotten battles/Pacific Fighters without a flaw.

I really enjoyed my hour that the game was running...but if this keeps up...well I'm not a happy camper:(.

So, anybody.....help!

Software installed right now:
Steam
Motherboard Monitor
Sygate
nVidia Drivers (GT & Board)
Firefox 1502
Winamp 5.21

edit:
Sygate / MBM / Winamp / Firefox don't affect the freeze ups. Happens with vanilla winxp as well when RO is being run through steam.
