Complete freezes/lock-ups

As the title indicates, I'm getting complete freezes/lock-ups forcing me to hard-boot.

They do happen like every thirty minutes in game.

Could a Dev or somebody that has knowledge in the matter analyse it?

Thanks for your suggestion, Rrralphster, the thing is: I was already getting it with Direct3D. I switched to Direct3D9.0 like one week ago.

The freeze ups/lock ups you are experiencing could be caused by a hardware problem. Have you tried checking the temperature of your CPU and GPU? While you're at it, why not memtest the RAM, too. Also run chkdsk /f /r on the hard drive. If everything checks okay, then that eliminates the hardware as the problem and the software could be at fault.

Just thought i'd post in here instead of creating a new thread. I just got the game today (downloaded off steam) but have been unable to play it due to constant freezing/crashing which requires a hard reboot. I can access the main screen once it loads but as soon as i click on any of the menus (multiplayer/configuration etc) it takes me to that screen then locks up. Sometimes the screen freezes other times it goes black. Each time this has happened on the main menu though.

I dont use zone alarm so that shouldn't be an issue and i don't think my pc spec is an issue either.

Anyone have any ideas how to sort this problem? Or am i joining the list of those waiting on a fix?

AMD athlon 64 3800+ dual core
2gig DDR ram
ATI x800xt pe
and fans all over the place.

Can run all other steam games such as DODS and CSS fine.

I'm going to be running a battery of hardware tests tonight, but I can already rule out CPU and MB overheating, they're both quite acceptably low, since I log them right up to the point of the lock-up. My GPU I'm not as sure, but it seems only somewhat warm to the touch (On the heatsink), and it's only a Radeon 9200, so it can only get so hot... :p

At the moment I'm having the more serious problem of not being able to launch the game at all, ever since I've switched it to software mode to troubleshoot. How do I put it back to the way it was? Sinc eI now can't launch the game, I can't troubleshoot the game very well... Any ideas on how to switch it back to D3D?

I'm guessing it might acctually be a video driver issue. At the moment I'm running the Omega 4.12s, which I read somewhere are some of the best for my card. I'll be upgrading to Catalyst 5.10s tonght, though, since they may be more stable... who knows...

So yeah, how do I get it out of software mode? Is there some .ini I can change, or something?

Anyway, it is in your Redorchestra.ini in [Engine.Engine] section. Below is a quote from tweakguides.com:

By default, UT2004 will run using the Direct3D API. This is the best option for most people, however, you may be able to resolve some problems on particular hardware/software combinations - and maybe get more FPS - by running UT2004 in one of the other available modes: OpenGL, D3D9 (D3D DirectX9), or Pixomatic (Software) mode.

To run in another mode, first place a ';' in front of the first line in this section of the .ini file. That means it should look like this:

;RenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice

Next, go to the relevant line below it, and remove the ';'. For example, if you want to run in OpenGL mode, remove the ';' in front of the OpenGL line so it looks like this:

What soundcards are you guys using and original soundcard (ie. creative) drivers or WDMs ?

Dunno if video driver thing, happened with all video drivers from 81-84 w/ my 6600GT and old PC:
K7S5A
XP2000
1GB PC2700
W2K
SBLive (creative drivers only)

as well as "new" PC:

It's something within the system though, i'm suspecting directsound or something similar that gets screwed up because when game starts for first time after starting comp, things are fine, FPS and all, then, after the freeze (if game recovers) its kinda sluggish and frames are erratic..going down from 40-50 to 15 and back up sort of regularly. When game is quit then by user everything seems fine so far for windows, start game back up without reboot and maybe after letting board/cpu/GPU cool down for a while (just to rule this out as well) it starts running this sluggish right off the bat but doesnt necessarily freeze up anymore. only cure is reboot and wait for next freeze...rinse repeat etc

Disclaimer: Oh, and with or without Teamspeak or such and no, no ZA or anything Symantec (Norton), no, nothing OCed, yes, all defragmented and checked (13h procedure) no spyware/trojans/malware (windows aside) and so forth. Only AntiVir and Sygate are running in bg and it happens with them turned off respectively with them not even installed as well. cachesizemegs set to 128 and precache turned on, since it doesnt matter because was turned off with previous (4d ago) ro.ini and same happened

Hiya,

Just bought the game today and hurrah I thought. I started the game via the RO desktop icon and later through Steam. I could acces the tutorial/single player and the configuration and the Helpsection, etc.. Pretty damn neat I thought, let's go play the game, and bam!....nothing happens..... when i push multiplayer the game just goes into a deep freeze! I cant do anything but reboot. Even if I close the game through taskmanager, the games closes down but keeps running in the task manger tray!
I've tried deleting the RO file, and the .blop file. Tried adding -client... to the shortcut, and still the same old thing...Freeze!

I've attached a copy of my RO.log.

Please help. Thank you.

Well, I just switched to "Software mode" in the drop-down menu in the video config menu. Then it said that RO:O had to restart for it to take effect, I said "k", and then it didn't start up again because of the error. I'll switch it back using the method you described when I get home from work. Thanks.

I just had an idea.
Crap, maybe not. I was thinking, Hudson and I both have Radeons on Asus boards, and there's an Asus BIOS update which "improves compatibility with ATI video cards."

I think I'm going to flash my BIOS when I get home. Maybe. We'll see. =P

But then I noticed that we're not all even using Radeons, never mind on similar Asus boards. =P

So. We'll just see how it goes when I get home.

Hi reg.24,

Are you using Zone Alarm? If so, in Zone Alarm you need to set Red Orchestra's permissions to allow in both server and access. Another option is to run Red Orchestra in windowed mode. Running in windowed mode will allow you to see the Zone Alarm pop-up asking for permission to allow Red Orchestra access to the Internet.

Ok I've tried changing all my main drivers but no luck. Changed the sound drivers (i've a sound blaster live). Also tried out different drivers for my graphics card to no avail either.

Sounds like i've got the exact same problem as Reg.24. I cant get no further than the multiplayer screen where it locks up. Doesn't even find a server.

**i also deleted the game from the steam list and tried downloading it again but no joy on this either.

You say you're not using Zone Alarm. Are you using another type of firewall or you're not using a firewall at all?

Also can you try this (see below):

Run the System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) using the following steps:
  1. Log on to Windows as a user with administrative privileges.
  2. Click Start->Run. In the Open textbox, type msconfig then press OK.
  3. In System Configuration Utility, click the General tab. In Startup Selection section, click Diagnostic Startup. Click Apply.
  4. While still in System Configuration Utility, click Services tab. In Services column, click DHCP client. Click Apply. Click OK.
  5. When the System Configuration pop-up dialog appears, click Restart.
  6. After the restart is complete, try to run Red Orchestra and see if the freeze ups disappear.

Thanks for the response kamikaze. I had already killed all running processes except for the essentials but had no luck with that.

Have also now tried your suggestion but getting the exact same problem. Games loading fine getting to main menu, then as soon as i access any of the sub menus it locks up.

As for firewalls i have none running but have a router linked up. I'll disconnect this and give it go see what happens.

***update: Its not my router. Still crashing even when directly connected to my modem and no firewalls running.

all checked

Can't be a hardware issue either as everything is else is running fine. I'm lost :(

Thanks KAMIKAZE, my CPU and GPU aren't overheating for sure: checked both with the appropriate softwares. the RAM is aight too.

The HD is ok too.

I'm no expert at all but the logs I posted seem to hint towards a static mesh or whatever texture that cannot be accessed during the game.

Note: it NEVER froze in the menus, only on-line after playing for 30-40 minutes.

Awright...

That down there is the log from the last session with RO 1001 and the 81.85 WHQL nvidia drivers. A fresh System dir of RO was extracted/used (cept for user.ini), vanilla redorchestra.ini.

I can reproduce the freeze ups 100% of the time at that location for example on Ogledow with RO 1001 (see screenshots).
Some screenshots right when the freeze starts as well as in between two freezes, showing artifacts.

Okay, so it seems as if we have a couple of dirrefent problems in here. We have the people who can't get past the menus, people who can't play for more than 5 minutes (me), and people who can't play for more than half an hour. Does it sound like all of these are the same issue? I think that my issue and Athena's issue are two flavours of the same bug, but the menu bug sounds like a different issue.

I'm currently uninstalling my video drivers so that I can do a clean install... I might see if I can get the game to run in OpenGL, and I'll see if that does it... And maybe I'll turn down my AGP to 4x...
