Japanese Grenades

I guess you're thinking of that scene from 'Letters from Iwo Jima'

That scene popped into my mind also immediately after reading his post. But why not since helmet is almost everytime present unlike rocks and other stuff you might want to hit it against. Though, gotta admit that I don't know if grenade really needed to be hit on something to arm it.

Always thought the jappas use the granades which the stick poking out the bottom

Edit: I think the biggest point to a ceramic grenade was the fact that Japan, even at the biggining of the war, had a very limited supply of metal and gasoline to smelt it with, with a ceramic grenade you can save supplies by having potters craft it for you and leave factories to produce more important arms such and ammo or tanks.

P.S to the looks it seems that the type 4 isn't the only non-metal grenade, the type 03 looks like it's some sort of woven material.
