Tank combat...

@Praxius-Neutral steer works by pushing one control lever forward while pulling the other backward. It permits the tank to turn without driving forward or backward. Kind of like this at the :15 second mark. And by traverse I meant the speed at which the turret rotates.

@Field Marshall Rommel-If you'd like to be picky we both could call it a "rack to deploy smoke candles" from now on  or in the native, "Nebelkerzenabwurfvorrichtung"

@Mormegil- I tried the arrow keys out last night and while they worked for traverse it was a little wonky. When you pressed left or right, the turret would continue to turn until you pressed the other direction then it would snap back the other way a bit before it stopped. Maybe I'll try to mess with the key bindings to see if it can be tweaked.

For some reason it's not well known..but if your tank commander and have your head sticking out.. which ever way you look, press the left mouse button and the turret will turn that way.. to your point of view...

Neutral steer also means..push the clutch in.. turn to direction..not all tanks have 2 levers..but they all neutral steer..

And you are very correct about all tanks not having 2 levers. The M1's I was a crewman on have someting akin to handlebars.

Same in the m60's.. t-bar.. we use to like neutral steer during winter .. seeing who could spin them the most while sliding down the ice streets of fort knox.. oh btw, come winter those are called skies not treads.. gota luv some cherry juice burning in the mornings too..it was the 70's..we didn't have much to do..;-)

I probably would not like combat games.. then again..I miss the smell of phosphorus in the mornings.. and tracer fire... on the line... ohhh how purrrdie... sigh..

opps sorry to hijack thread..out..

Christie suspension....Bad optics
Torsion bar was superior for a tank. The T-34's suspension was planned to be switched to torsion bar in 1941 however this as well as some other more invasive innovations were dropped after Operation Barbarossa for obvious reasons.
As for poor optics lets not forget or discount the F-34's limited accurate range. The F-34 was not that accurate a weapon (compounded by the poor optic) less so at a distance, the direct shot limit to the T-34's F-34 was at around 800 meters.

PzIV didn't have smoke a grenade system.
The Panzer IV A-F (including some F2's) had a Nebelkerzenabwurfvorrichtung (smoke candle system) on the rear of the tank starting from 1938 onwards it was officially dropped in February of 1942. Staring from September 1942 smoke candle discharges were placed on the turret (Panzer IV G's) and removed in the spring of 1943. The Nahverteidigungswaffe (could fire smoke) were later installed on the Panzer IV H and J variants in the Summer of 1944.

Not to mention of course the 2-3 "Nebelgranate" (smoke) rounds that most Panzers were equipped with.

I don't remember which version of the PIII/IV had electric traverse instead of manual operation.
All Panzer IV's had powered traverse save the last variant (the Panzer IV Ausf J) as for the Panzer III all were hand traversed.

the movement keys to move the turret, it was clunky, bulky, slow and a pain in the arse when trying to get an accurate shot at long distance.
Completely the opposite of what I feel the keyboard first has separate keys for pitch and yaw is much more accurate for making minor adjustments as it is possible to change the pitch or yaw of the main gun of a tank very slightly with a quick tap of a keyboard which imperative to be able to do on large tank maps (1000-4000 meter engagement ranges).

The mouse on the other hand has a lot more room for potential errors and is much less accurate than the keyboard because you no longer have the very slight adjustment ability provided by a quick tap of the keyboard instead you are forced to control both the pitch and yaw at the same time while trying to turn the gun towards the enemy quickly. This leads to the common occurrence of overshooting the target and having to correct as well as the issue where the mouse does not like the particular area you want to point at and always being a little too far to the left or right of it which a problem with long distance tanking. Lastly it is very noticeable that the turret is mouse controlled as the the turret rotation it self if gittery and not a smooth transition due to the player having to desperately drag the mouse a bunch of times rather than depressing a button until the direction is perfect.

Neutral steer .
Turning/pivoting the tank in place, but its not possible with the current tank models and requires "gear switching" as well

The tank classes called "Tank Section Leader" and "Tank Platoon Commander" have available Smoke rounds in the tank.
Smoke rounds =/= Nebelkerzenabwurfvorrichtung If anything, one could argue that smoke rounds were rare compared to the nebelkerzenabwurfvorrichtung.

This is obviously not a big deal - but the current German tank is a Panzer IV G model.
Actually, its an F2. Biggest hint is the muzzlebreak. And don't say "but they renamed it to G" because the tank's nameplate would still read Ausf. F2.

RO.......It's more or less a KISS system that is more realistic than most BF style games.
No its not. Click here
