I think there are some setups that are not playing the sound to the best quality.
I am running 5.1 surround with 128 channels and the sounds are absolutely awesome.

Am running 128 channels. With an Asus Xonar DX, with Dolby Headphone and 7.1 VSS.
It sounds clean, and artillery, sounds somewhat powerful.

The general sounds are fantastic, it's the some of the weapon sounds that seem to need abit more oomph to them, like the MG34. It's not that they sound wrong, it's just as if they're missing the thump they have in reality

That thump is mixed into the sub-bass frequencies. Why can<t I select 128 channels? It always go back to 32
Old soundcard maybe?
Old built in soundcard with no support for more than 32?

I much prefer the sounds from RO1 if I'm honest, firing a machine gun doesn't feel the same. Dunno if maybe my sounds bugged.

Can you list what sound device you are using?
If it is onboard audio listing the motherboard can help identify it.
An old sound card might be just that old...
Or in case of both might just need a driver update.
If you don't 'know' you can see by Right clicking on "My computer" or "Computer" from the start button. Then go to Device Manager. Look for Sound/Audio drop down box and it will list a device for you.

When I set the sound channels in game to 128 it also reverts back to 32, it also reverts back to 32 if I set it to 8. The setting seems to be stuck if anything. Is there an .ini file that we can edit to make it 128?

Each sound playing takes up one sound channel, effectively limiting the amount of sounds that can play at the same time.

Having fired my friend's original MP40 both indoor and outdoor, I am extremely impressed at how RIGHT ON the sounds for it are.
The rifles have the sharp 'crack'. The funny thing is the people complaining about the sounds post YouTube clips of weapons that were recorded with phone cameras and other non-professional equipment.
