Well it does more than that. It gives quite good recommendations and it allows you to look what you listen most to. It doesnt use allot of system resources aswell.
There's a stand alone plugins for winamp I believe. I use Foobar2k and its plugin works just fine.
I tried scrobbler's program awhile back and liked it for what it was. The radio thing is pretty impressive. Likewise, I didn't want a program open just to send bytes of data to a server that could easily be done with a .dll.
Besides if you download the Last.fm client it just runs in the background and you can use pretty much any music player there is, it recognizes the songs played and uploads the info to the site at the same time recommendating new bands similar to your current listenings (ok not really, but it recommends bands which other listeners of your bands listen a lot)
