Today the Ministry of Culture in Denmark announced that the government has decided to instate a new Internet Tax. There were a proposal a month ago, but now it is being the reality - and even more expensive than it looked like.

The license will be $388.7 a year for owning a computer with an internet connection, a cell phone or even an Ipod.

This is the worlds first Internet Tax ever instated.

The license inspectors can also go from home to home and find out if you have something that you have to pay a license for.

If you dont pay it, the punishments can be severe.

All they will offer in return is - a new childrens channel!

I am going to pay $388.7 a year just because the danish families want a new childrens channel. That is what the money are going to be used for.

A TV channel?? that makes absolutely no sense, if anything should be given back, (and it should) it ought to be directly related to internet services... lame.

Facts about Denmark:

The tax is at 40 % for low income.
50 % for middle income.
60 % for high income.

The Sales Tax VAT is at 25 %.

The car tax is 25 % of the cars price and 180 %.

Besides of this, there will be a new Internet Tax at $388.7 a year.

And then we have Compulsory Military Service. All males are required to serve. I was lucky I wasnt drafted.

Besides of this, internet connections in Denmark cost about $60/month for a 2 Mbit internet connection.

In the nursing homes, the eldery are often left alone to **** in their pants. There has been a scandal about this. And the government do nothing about it.

The government also owns the biggest Public Service channel, DR, who will recieve the Internet Tax. DR is a socialist channel, and as such, even though there were a lot of criticism towards the Internet Tax, they only interviewed those who agreed with it. It has a lot of censorship.

There has also been censorship on other things in Denmark. Some months ago, a man made a web site, where he criticised the police. The police then called the provider of the server to shut it down because it had too much criticism.

They are only raising revenue to pay for the services the people request the government to supply...

Except that the goverment doesnt supply the internet, as thats probably run entirely by private companies. I guess its like Norway, where the state sponsored the initial building and maintainence of telephone lines etc via a state run company, in our case "Televerket" which then got privatized and became Telenor. If we were to pay taxes for the net now, then the only thing we'd get back would be the websites run by the state ..

I guess one good thing will come of it, i doubt they will be reelected.

Keep in mind, for all the huge taxes, the social safety net in Denmark is HUGE. If you're a Danish-born citizen you have what is quite possibly the most incredible 'benefits' package given by any country, just for being a citizen.

Only Sweden can really compete, so far as I know (and I grant, that knowledge is slim, so feel free to educate me :))

I don't get this internet tax thing though. I can't find any articles about it. Links dktekno? What paper is it in?

I see nothing strange with that license fee.

It incorperates all kind of equipment that can recive TV brodcasts. Denmark just like sweden, has had this kind of fee on TVs for a long time to secure public service TV.

Now I don't see anywhere in those 2 articles that you linked that it's a internet tax (it might be that they just chose to not mention it).

Also the tax on iPods does not surprise me at all. We, here in sweden, have had a extra fee on HDDs, MP3 players, VHS tapes, music tapes, CD-r and DVD-r for a long time. Basically on all type of media that can store video and music, almost everything of this extra fee on all these devices goes directly into the pocket of the poor companies in the record and movie industry.

Sorry for not being more clear in my statement.
Let me try again.
The more government services and programs = greater tax burden.

So as governemnt costs increase they must take from somewhere to increase revenue. What else can they do?
