Create a desktop shortcut of the game in question, then set the compatibility mode on the shortcut and only use the shortcut to play the game.

thanks, i made another shortcut, but i don't see any way to change compatibility mode in it. on win7 64.

that's what i did, but there's no "compatibility" tab in the new folder when i right click on it. i must be doing something wrong.
there is a compatibility tab in the steam folder, but it's box is unchecked. i can't find a compatibility tab in any of my desktop icons.

What's wrong with your compatibility exactly? I used to get an error from that whenever trying to launch Big Picture mode, and this fixed it for me: http://joshmccarty.com/2012/01/turn-off-compatibility-mode-for-steam/

i'm trying to play the coh2 beta and it crashes everytime before i see anything. the only error message i get at all is an incompatability mode error. i guess i'll just never play the beta or buy the game. no matter, i doubt i'd ever play it, as long as RO2 still lives.
