Best game soundtracks ever?

  • Gothic 1 and 2. Haven't played #3 but if its roughly the same then #3 too.
  • Arcanum. Sad but not depressing. Not really catchy but unique and fitting for that 19th century fantasy vs. steam punk setting.
  • StarCraft.
  • Raven Shield if you like Zimmeresque tracks.
  • No one lives forever 2. Its been too long since I played Nolf 1 so I don't remember the soundtrack anymore. The one in Nolf 2 however is excellent. Nothing I would listen to outside of the game but it fits great.
  • Zelda Occarina of Time. OoT is the only one I played for a longer period of time so that's the only one I remember soundtrackwise. It all sounded somewhat artificial but some tracks totally let your forget that. E.g. the song that is played in the Gerudo valley.
  • Metal Gear Solid Substance. The music during the intro is spectacular and the rest fits perfect in the game but I wouldn't listen to it when I'm not playing.
  • Donkey Kong. The more distinct ones.
  • Mario.
  • Fable. Great music.
  • Soul Reaver 1.
Aaaannnd: Probably one of the best bombastic action tracks EVER. One that lets Zimmer sound boring: The music used in the Trailer for Duke Nukem Forever on the E3 2001. Download it. NOW!

FALLOUTS. The first game and the sequel. They have absolutely perfect soundtracks by Mark Morgan. Mostly ambient, sometimes a bit trip-hoppy even. They fit the atmosphere of the games perfectly, and actually play a major part in creating the the atmosphere. Absolutely amazing sound score - I'm running out of superlatives.

I'm listening to those as I'm writing this, and only listening to those really makes me want to install the games.

Ninja Gaidens always have had such excellent music.

Soldiers : Heroes of WWII has also damm great musics.

Resident Evil 2 and 4 also have overall quite great. RE1 and 3 are ok, but lacks something E.G. RE2 has.

Few that I can recall at the moment. Rest have either been mentioned multiple times or I just can't remember at the moment.

Edit: Panzer General 2. Man those musics (especially british campaign) are just awesome :D

Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear had a pretty awesome soundtrack, I used to pop in the game CD in the car and listen to it

yeah it was nice on older games when the soundtrack was cd audio on the gamedisk. I thought Rouge spear was the pick of series - tracks 6 and 7 were great- really liked the choir/egyptian style intro to track 6

Plenty to download on Bill Brown's site too.

And never forget Grim Fandango! Big band, Bebop and Bones:

Some good music mentioned earlier too; Fallout, GTA series, Defcon, and Shadow of The Beast FTW!

Thanks Odin1899 for the reminder how excellent this is :)

But I'm not a fan of the epic/heroic hollywood-soundtracks of too many games (including RO!). I guess with war games there's only one type of music which is fitting but I find it just boring... :p
