A Winter War mod

I really hope that something comes out of this discussion. It would be great to fight as a Fin in the three wars they fought: the Winter War alone against the Soviet Union, the Continuation War with Germany against the Soviet Union, and the Lapland War alone against Germany.

Multiple possibilities of maps with different implications of Finland's army. That would be great!

Snow Storm (working title)

Hi,

After some readings, I came up with the idea of creating a mod that would be released in three phases following the three wars Finland fought during World War II.

The first phase will bring the player in 1939 when the Soviets invades Finland. This conflict has been called the Winter War. During that war, many battles took place which, often, implicated infantry units with light tank support. For that phase, finnish weaponary must be created while all the soviet parts are already in vanilla Red Orchestra. For this first release, I suggest 4 maps. Three infantry and one tank battle. With those reasonable objectives, I think that a small team of modders can achieve this goal.

The second phase of the mod would concern the Continuation War. In this war, Fins are still fighting the Soviet army, but now they receive support from their allie: Germany. So german weaponnery, tanks and uniforms would be added to the mod (all this been done by Tripwire). Of course, a lot of mapping to do and surely some new finnish weapons.

The third and last phase would be about the Lapland War when the Fins join the Allies and fight against Germany.

I followed this conversation and I thought that I could bring the spark that would start the project. So I

I only wish i have the mod and codeing skill because i would personally love to see this mod to happen.I would even like to say that whit all do respect that i would even prefer this mod over Darkest Hour which das look great. But look at this like this this mod would be unique and original because there is no mod like it.Expect the one mod for bf1942.

in any case there have been so many mods about the americans on normandy beaches or something like it in the past. And this is what makes red orchestra so original and unique.

btw i mean no disrespect to the Darkest Hour mod community by this coment.

I finally got my copy of Winter War on DVD, it's a very good film but makes me think that the sort of warfare that was fought might be hard to do in an RO mod. For the most part there were just waves of Russians, with support of tanks at times, running at the Finnish lines, and the only real defense the Finnish soldiers had against the tanks were Molotov cocktails which would I think be very hard to do since they're incendiary weapons.

Plus the Finns were getting constantly bombarded with artillery which in RO could easily thin out the defending lines and make it an easy win for Russians. I just think it would be really hard to portray the Finns ferocious defense against an overwhelming Russian force... In a mod for RO at least...

However, I'd still love to the see some sort of mod made about one or more of conflicts between Finland and Russia. It's just how to go about it that's the problem.

I thought I'd post this link:http://www.winterwar.com/mainpage.htm
, to give you some reference about winterwar. This site is really helpfull, just take a look at it:).

And what comes to my skills for modding, I am still learning the basics of the UnrealEd, so mapping is my strength I think:)( I have made some maps for CoD series, but never released any). And maybe some skinning but I'm not the best person to use the photoshop.

It's true, the Continuation War would offer a lot more as a mod and for gameplay, but there really are some battles in Winter War that would be absolute classics. Sgt. Lewis for example mentioned many famous battlefields.

Just think about russians having have to capture the Mannerheim Line. It was most of all very well placed and planned defence line, but nothing like "unbeatable fortress" or "finnish version of Maginot Line" as the russians claimed after suffering horrible losses capping that meat grinder.

Bunkers, trenches, dug-outs, foxholes, mounted mg's, sniper duels, russians hammering defences with artillery and trying to satchel at first obstacles and later bunkers...

I'm a Finn myself, so I have an interest in this project. Not all of the Winter War was human waves and trenches. North of Lake Lagoda the Finnish ski troops used Motti tactics to cut off, surround, and annihilate Russian armor columns and launch general raids and ambushes. (See battle for Suomussalmi)

There is also the one major Finnish counter-offensive launched during the war, and the battle for Tolvaj

Found a nice documentary about The Winter War on Youtube. I think this is a great pack of information for those who don't like to read dozens of web pages to get even a little bit of idea about this forgotten war.

EDIT. Oh and if someone is interested in Finnish war movies, there's a big war movie project in Finland in progress.

"Tali-Ihantala 1944" is the title of the movie.

Well, that's what i feared....it seems that all the community human ressource for modding are curently working on the 4 mods already going on....with Iron Europe's struggle to find some modders, I should of known that this call would not receive any answer...

Oh well....maybe someone could try again to talk with the guys who started to work on the Finland at War mod for HL2? Give them your guest passes so they try RO and fall in love with the game...maybe it's our only chance...

(I have 2 guest passes to give but I will only do so to modders(skinners, modelers, mappers, animator) who wants to try RO. We need some human ressource!)

Thanks Riska for this documentary....it was really interesting
