STALKER Mega-Thread; Clear Skies are Coming!

They are Ukrainians. ;)
But I absolutely agree with you, this game is really something.. Last time I was so emerged into game's atmosphere was when I was playing System Shock 2.
I LOOVE to stay and listen when stalkers play their guitars.
Ah ok, GJ Ukrainians! *Bandits* " Chicky Bricky" WTH does that mean? lol. Also, I have a problem with excess gear. Should I put it in a designated "stash spot" marked on PDA?..because I made my own stash (on top of arena roof in Duty stronghold) and when I came back later almost all my stuff was gone except for my RPG (which was funnily my most valueable item).

I think you could try putting your things into some chest or stashes, it is more possible that they will lie there. But I don't do that, I either sell it to traders or i keep them with me.
Chicky briky is a slang, meaning "everything's cool".
I wonder, do Stalkers speak Russian in eng version? I mean, when they sit by the fire and talk? If yes, few jokes :) :
Stalker was cought by a gang of bandits. They didn't say a word, tied him and put him in a well, head down. After few minutes they took him out and asked: "Money?" -"No". They immediatly put him in a well again, then took him out. "Weapons?" -"No". Bandits put him there once more. "Artifacts?" -"Dudes, either you hold me longer, or give me a flashlight, I can't see sh*t in this muddy water!".

Stalker comes to a crossroad. Near it he sees a sign:
Go left and you will find anomalies
Go straight and you will find blood****ers, radiation and bandits
Go right and you will find booze and hookers
Stalker gave it a thought and went left.. Walks and think: "Dang, when I'll get back to camp, I have to ask veterans, what the hell are "booze and hookers".

You can put objects in Stashes and the items will stay there, unless other Stalkers find them. You must remember the A.I. is very good in this game. If you hide your stuff in a stash you found because you were sent messages on your PDA, there's a good chance other Stalkers will be headed that way and take your stuff.

Try dropping stuff in the middle of the woods off the path and come back days later and your stuff will mostly still be there. I dropped a pile of guns, ammo, and energy drinks near the farm you come to at the beginning, and five real-time days later I loaded my game up and happened to be walking past and went to check and it was all still there.

With the incredible amount of positive comments in this thread I'm really thinking about buying S.T.A.L.K.E.R..

What's the weapon handling and IS model like compared to RO? Because the models look a bit fudged to me with a bad 3d perspective.

I also read about the "need for 20 shots to drop a target" but also about the double damage mutator so that's not an issue.

Fellow RO'ers please give me your opinion about the weapons in this game so I can take the final decision.

Thanks.

I read that the patch has corrected the weapon-damages to some degree.:)
And so, certainly for guys that are getting the game now, make sure to patch up, before you start!
For me, this patch wasn't a big issue (regarding incompatibility of old saved-games), as I wasn't very far into the game yet...just installed the patch, and I'm looking forward to a fresh restart.

Ironsights work like any ironsights. They're straight down the sights of the gun model.

As for 20 shots to drop a target. This is not true and the people saying that can't aim. Headshots kill in ONE shot. Period. The problem is, people think all the guns in this game are laser rifles and hit right where you're aiming. That is not the case. I repeat, is NOT the case. Bullet dispersion and accuracy decline over distances (I can't believe the realism Nazi's here don't understand this). While the dispersion IS exaggerated, you also have to take into account that your enemies are usually wearing ARMOR. An average encounter takes 3-5 bullets to kill someone, or 1 to the head if you can get close enough to hit it.

As you get further in the game the guns become much more accurate and powerful. What you start off with is awful and they really can't hit anything outside of 20-30ft.

This requires you to take a tactical approach to combat and use cover and outthink the enemy AI which is scary in terms of tactics. If you miss the first few shots and there is cover near them. Might as well reload, because you'll lose sight of them and the next time you see them they'll have flanked you and unloaded a shotgun to your head.

This one (Metro 2033:The Last Refuge- schedueled for late 2008) reminds me very much of stalker- in many aspects. It seems like those post U.S.S.R.ians are developing a style of their own- unpolished, gritty and harsh.

I noticed alot of things similar from STALKER (the sounds, the textures, the fire), perhaps it's the same engine?

Hahaha, that's the cheesiest trailer I've seen in a long time. It looks interesting but I'm not too fond of the major part of the game (presumably) taking place underground because it could mean linear gameplay.

And yes, it looks like it has the same engine and uses same content that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. does.

The trailer is lame, no doubt, but I have a feeling its gonna be a great game. You can view a list of features it has in gamer's sites. One I found particularly interesting is that the player could have a significant impact on the story if he'll keep his ears open and sense the political climate around him.
The subway is divided by different societies, each with its own idealogy/ political system, and NPCs will always keep doing something i.e. talking, eating, living.

Im 90% sure its not the same engine, which makes the striking similarity interesting in terms of how cultural styles evolve.

From what Ive seen there are large city ruins sections as well and the game promise to be open ended and free roaming to a high extenct.

Well, try other mirrors by googling "stalker patch", found these in 2 secs:

http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/10335/S.T.A.L.K.E.R.+1.0001+Patch+-+US

http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/10336/S.T.A.L.K.E.R.+1.0001+Patch+-+Non-US

(registering is free and it's awesomely fast)

Edit: I checked their website too and they happen to have their own 4A engine. They may have co-worked with the X-ray guys but I don't know, maybe it's just a co-incidence.

I hope that they hire a bit better translators and story-writers for Metro so that they can deliver even a more interesting plot with the game too. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has awesome atmosphere but the main story isn't that alluring. Also, some more innovative quests like escorting a person or defending some area could give some fresh air to the constant "go there and kill / get that, come back and get stuff" missions. And sometimes it would be nice if the quests wouldn't give that much material profit but change the course of the game, make your actions give a different impact on the political and social climate depending on what you decide to do (like in Fallout 1 & 2).

Thnx m8

Forgot to mention- metro is a book adaptation, I didnt read it but it supposed to be a cult classic in Russia. So the devs has a hard 'coded' referance material and the story will not lack.

guys, help me please... with DualCore6300, gf6800GT, 1GB Ram (333) it sruns quite worst than I expected... I have resolution on 960*600 shadows on minimum, very low details on view distance, low textures etc. It is just my personal feeling that it could run better than that? Or I just need to tweak little bit? HW? some INI?... thx.

Put your dynamic lighting down to static. That seems to help alot.
