I've been listening to Lacuna Coil for about 4 years and the singer Cristina Scabbia is just insanely incredible IMO. Their songs are insanely infectious and luring. It's one of the few "popular" metal bands that I like nowadays. She has one of the most penetrating and powerful and seductive female voices in the metal world. I find her incredibly sexy (did I just say that?) Ut oh! Check them out Metalheads! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqv_C9Vn_u8

Here's an entire concert performance:http://www.downloadfestival.tv/mofo/watch/461/ Damn!

Not bad metal - thanks for that - I'll keep an eye (and ear) out.
Yeah they truly are incredible for the most part due to her incredible voice, but the song stuctures are surprizingly complex and complement her voice perfectly. I just missed seeing them live which makes me pissed......have to wait till next time.
She really needs to change her name from 'Scabbia' though. :D
Na, that's part the "beauty" IMO.

Lacuna Coil is amazing. It's perfect metal/hard rock for me - heavy and in-your-face yet melodic and intricate, with a highly talented female vocalist complemented by a good male vocalist. I've got Comalies and Karmacode and both are frequently playing in my car.

My only *slight* beef is that their lyrics have an ESL (English as a Second Language) thing going on, where sometimes they simply don't make sense. But that's just a little nitpick. The melodies are beautiful, the guitars and bass smack you in the face, and that drummer can really lay it down. The riff that closes out "Fragile" on Karmacode is one of my favorite riffs in recent memory.

Screw Evanescence. Amy Lee can sing, but every single damn song sounds the freaking same. Slit your damn wrists already, lady! Lacuna Coil is so much better. It's like Evanescence with balls. :p

Oh, and here's some eye candy. :D

Yeah, words almost fail to describe the reasons why I like them so much ( I'm 1/4 Italian which probably plays a part). They are brutal, beautiful, incredibly melodic and masterful songwriters with passion & inspiration for blowing your ****ing mind & ears unlike any other female fronted metal band I've ever heard. Yeah "Evanescence with balls" is a good description except Lacuna Coil are a real pro band with pro musicians and you can't compare them to nearly talentless "image riders" like Evanescence. Not only does Cristina look great but she has some SERIOUS PIPES to back up her image. She is a real professional vocalist. Dumb bands with no inspiration can keep putting pretty girls (who are not even real singers!) in bands but those bands will always **** and only attract ignorant kids or adults with poor musical judgement. I've yet to get Karmacode but I'm going to ASAP. I can't stop playing that download festival clip!! Absolutely incredible! ****ING AWESOME!! (the metal it makes me cuss, I'm very passionate about good metal, hehe:p)

Woah there, there's other cool bands with a female lead, Evanesence is not the only alternative.

Lacuna Coil r0xx0rz, no question, i love them, but if you like Lacuna, here's some others you'll allso want to check out:

Within Temptation: A bit softer, but very high quality goth with a hint of metal!

The Gathering: Easilly on par with Lacuna Coil, you should waste no time checking thease guys out!

Persephone: Not so much metal, but very good and dark goth, excellent stuff there.

Closterkeller: Polish band, they rock, nuff said.

There's a lot of good female-fronted heavy and hard rock music out there.

Check out KidneyThieves. Think of Nine Inch Nails with a female singer, running the range from a heavy industrial sound to an ethereal softness. Awesome band who released two kickass albums before breaking up in 2004. I saw them live when they opened for KMFDM here in Miami - phenomenal live show.

I've also heard Gretchen, Snake River Conspiracy, Switchblade Symphony and Guano Apes and liked them all to varying degrees. Snake River is pretty cool - it's like a heavier version of Garbage.

Ones I didn't like were Tapping the Vein and Flyleaf (both because their singer was simply too whiny and screechy). There's also Otep if you like your women satanic and screaming at 300db constantly, but that's not my thing. Heavy I like - pure noise and 200bpm hammer drumming just annoys me.

as for ESL, be glad that they even sing in english :p , of course native speakers always have something to nitpick about, but there are european bands who

Elis - a band from Liechtenstein (the little brother of Switzerland) sadly their vocalist died this summer :( she did a great performence when i saw them live 2 years ago

Midnattsol - from Norway , they play a mix of gothic and doom metal (their vocalist is the little sister of Liv Kristine Krull (former Theater of Tragedy vocalist)) and now wife of Alexander Krull the mastermind of Atrocity(german gothic metal band)

Xandria - german gothic metal band

Nothing wrong with lacuna coil but they just are not my cup of tea.

When I listen to gothic/doom metal I prefer when the female song is more classically oriented and coupled with a growling male (I like the contrast)

An example is Tristania also a norwegian gothic/doom band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7fohUVVlxM

An other example is Sirenia, which is basically a spinoff for one of the old Tristania members but compared to Tristania the music is noticably "blackened" and the female vocalist is not at all specially classically oriented (Vibeke the singer from Tristania is loads better)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ__Utksz94

Another band that I finde some songs very good is Epica from Netherlands

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4YMs0x--fk

But generally for this entire genre gothic metal and gothic/doom metal I think atleast I have become kind of spoiled by Tarja from Nightwish vocal capabilities very few come up to her level in my opinion.

But if you are going to go really hardcore listen to Therion :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6h84W8qz0I

This one is a later creation by them when they went more or less orchestral only

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nguo0Uq0ESg

(listen to both Therion vids I posted even if you didn't like the first they are quiet different in style)

Yeah I've heard of (and heard) pretty much all these bands: Within Tempatation, The Gathering, Kidney Thieves, Switchblade Symphony, Guano Apes, OTEP (hey OTEP trying to sound like a male vocalist when you're a female is a big turn off Mkay), Tristania, Sirenia, Nightwish, Therion. It's all personal taste really because most those bands listed are good quality & talented, but it's certain styles I don't like too much. Alot of very good female rock (& hard rock) bands but I mostly like metal. I don't really like the operatic/symphonic/fantasy themed type bands either and usually prefer more dark, heavy & powerful (yet still melodic) type Female fronted Metal like Lacuna Coil. However 2 other Female fronted bands which I enjoy alot are Avrigus & Dargaard. Dargaard aren't metal but they are dark & melancholic & primitivly ritualistic. They do both have some symphonic parts but they are done in a way I like very much. Avrigus is really something rare; sinister, doomy, dark, with a terrific female vocalist. Check out Avrigus's song "veritas" It's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.
Here is an Avrigus song put to a montage of "Dark Angels": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5gyBUkaCXs (hehe the guy from Avrigus even posted on youtube, nice) Anyway feel free to keep recommendations and links comming.

Doom Metal at is pure form is very simmilar to death metal with one major difference, it's often played extremly slow all the riffs everything this gives a feeling of impending doom to it. Also the vocals don't have to be growling in doom metal.

Gothic metal often have female vocals and a more gothic team to the lyrics also in many cases is orchestral in style. Also the theme of the lyrics and mood of the music in gothic metal gives a feeling of impending doom. Some band also combine different elements from gothic and doom metal playing a bit slower often with rough or growling male vocals countered by a fragile female soprano.

So the name doom metal is more a description of the mood in the music and with alot of gothic metal bands are somewhere in between.
