Garry's Mod goes retail - 28th of december

"Independent Software developer Garry Newman and Valve today announce an electronic distribution agreement for Garry's MOD, the popular software utility downloaded by hundreds of thousands to create mini-games, many of the most popular movie shorts on web sites such as YouTube.com, and more.

"The new version has been created from scratch so almost everything has been revised and re-invented," said Garry Newman, creator of Garry's MOD. "It has a bunch of new tools to play with (winches, hydraulics and hoverballs), totally new spawn menu and a few new Post Processing effects to play with. The great thing about Steam is that I can update really regularly, really easily - which is something I plan on doing - so expect more tools/gamemodes/stuff to come."

The first commercial release of Garry's MOD will be made available on November 29, 2006. Since a Source-based product is required to run Garry's MOD, Valve will be offering a special bundle of Garry's MOD plus Counter-Strike: Source for just $24.95. For those who already own a Source-based game, Garry's MOD will be sold separately for just $9.95."

Oh and for the people that don't know what Gmod is:

Oh, and anyone that makes any "Paying for a mod is stupid"-esq comments, lets see, where else have we seen a popular and successful mod go retail? Hmm... I wonder?
Counter Strike
Day of Defeat
Red Orchestra :p

Infact Gmod is proberbly the one that earned it best, because he didn't get bought up by valve, and he did it by himself, not by winnning a contest (not saying there is anything bad about that, but still...)

Heh are you sure this belongs in the "Gaming" section of the forum ;)? Unless this version will have some type of online play that is fun and where other players (read: jerks) can't screw up what your doing (or simply not help you or your team and just screw around the whole time) then I might get it. But really, this "game" is built for movies and pictures, its unlikely there will be any game part to that is fun or non-repetitive, well at least initially. Depending on how the Gmod communty will accept it, there could be tons of addons (including new game modes). Though, based on older gmod releases, the addons will mostly consist of models, maps, and skins. So I will have to wait and see how well it does in a month or so after release, though if you liked the mod, meaning you have HL2 and/or CS: S, then I suggest you pick it up, $10 is very resonable for this "game". However, if you don't own those games then I say the $24.95 price tag for the stand alone version is in two words: highway robbery. I could understand $14.95 or possibly even $19.95 (absolute maximum), but $24.95 is just insane. Its not like every single modder for source games is going to jump on board and start modding for Gmod, thereby creating a almost endless amount of new content.

Hmm.. Gmod is great fun, but is it really worth money? im not so sure.. its not really a game, its just something to tinker around with for a few minutes when you are bored.

Well, if its was $5 i might considder it, but $10 for a mod that lets you build scenes out of HL2 stuff, no, i dont think so, it would have to be its own "game" with its own props and charectors to mess around with, and a solid editor and stuff like that, then it would be worth money.
