Progressive Class Unlocks

If there are only around 10 total players in the server (five on each team) I thought it would be a good idea that there should only be a squad leader class open, and MG, and then just the rifleman class for the rest. As more people join the server, more weapon classes are made available, such as assault trooper, semi-auto rifleman, another MG (it all depends on what maps have what classes). The reasoning behind this is that when you have a small squad of players the majority should be rifleman as it is when you have a full team the percentage of rifleman to other classes is a little more historically accurate (at least on official maps).

Of course, if people don't like the idea, maybe it can be made into an optional server setting, just as the map voting modes are. I just want to see more people learn the joys of bolting.

All controls and limiters placed on servers must be optional. Also, just because you like Bolts.. well let's put it this way, there are just as many, perhaps more, who enjoy using the other weapons and vehicles RO offers.

ps; your bias is showing. :)

He's got a point though, with 10 or each side of a map you often have no regular riflemen at all since everyone picks smg/semi/mg/etc first, which is wrong realism-wise.

And what's wrong with that? There were many skirmishes between light patrols that were purposely equipped with only automatic weapons. (greater/quicker close combat killing power)

Bolt action weapons were soon recognized as better suited for bunker, entrenchment warfare. While the Bolt's were isssued in great numbers, the bolt action riflemen fell in greater numbers. Sad, but true.

Many bolt action weapons were dropped in the mud when the opportunity to pick up an automatic weapon presented itself. I wonder why....

It's okay. I guess you're just afraid to bolt.

*cough* This from the guy who just got through telling people to stop accusing him of complaining about being 'naded....

In any case, I don't think there's really much that needs to be done. If you play on servers with more people anyways, you'll have plenty of riflers, and if you're playing on a smaller server, then it'll be more realistic that the small squad of men would've acquired some nice new weaponry by now.

Honestly, I don't think you should unlock, the world is basicly The Early Bird Gets the Worm. I love bolting, and appreciate anybody who does because they want too, and I don't respect an SMGer or Semi Auto Rifleman as much as a bolter, seeing how easy it is to use the class. (SMGs have no recoil, its a bug.) Also, if you had this unlocking thing, players woudn't bolt for the fun and skill of playing as them, they just want that noobie Semi Auto Rifle. Just because they don't bolt, does not mean they should.

It also displays realism. The guys who comes first get the weapons they want. Same goes to Red Orchestra.

There will be few who will turn to the joys and skill of bolting, they still want those autos.

Hehe. There is a difference between being able to run and gun and being able to single-handedly turn a battle around. SMG's have their uses - to clear out bunkers, rooms, etc.

How about this?

I don't really respect anyone who uses a bolt, because they just hang back and snipe.

Sounds stupid? You bet.

Don't try to lump SMGer's like me in with a bunch of CS:S kiddies.

What I meant was, SMGs are very important to the game, they are essential to winning a game, but you expect them to be on top. The reason for SMGers is to attack the enemy and do as much damage as possible thats there role, Bolters and MGers are supposed to stand back and hold ground, so you don't expect them to be on top. Semi Auto Riflemen are a different story. When there is an SMGer on top, you know its going to happen. For a class that is much harder, like Sniper or MGer, its a bit suprising. SMGers ars supposed to turn the tides, they are the offensive firepower of the team.

As for the topic, SMGers have always used SMG, because they are good with it, if they had rifles, they woudn't do as well. Kinda like a Doctor switching places with a Dentist. A specialist is good at 1 thing.

bah i play as i go, if i get in a server in the middle of the battle and i get a bolt, sweet! that makes getting a PPSH off of a dead russian ( or MP off of a german ) that much more enjoyable

CQB with a bolt action rifle is something else, rifle-butts and hand grenades are in order here!

Mostly i just try to get into the cap zones, be I SMG or Rifleman, most maps have ranges that are considered CQB in real combat anyway.

He means X number of players must join a team before class Y becomes available.

It might make for an interesting mutator, but that's all it should be.

I'll say this, though. Everyone's got their preferences. Me, I do love a great bolt fight, but I'll pick whatever weapon I feel I'll be most effective with. Sometimes it's a boltie, sometimes it's an SMG, sometimes it's an MG. I don't identify myself as any one class of player. That's my preference.

Someone else's preference, however, should not dictate how I have to play the game. Now, I'm all for implementing realism, but there's realism and there's "You have to play the game my way".

I see a lot of threads that are about improving realism, but I also see a lot of threads that are basically "Why won't people play the game the way I want them to play it."

For the latter type of thread, I guess I'd say get used to the fact that you can't make people play how you want. You can't make them not rambo around to some extent. You can't make them be tactical and play as if this is literally their only life, etc. Hell, even if people did all take nothing but bolties, they'd STILL find ways to rambo around and just charge you, hipshoot, etc. And no amount of changing the game is gonna change that. Some folks just play games differently. Hell, some folks juggle geese.
