Level Design Houses and such

There isn't a right way or a wrong way to make a house in UEd. You can use Static Meshes, BSP, a combination of both, etc. I would suggest spending a few hours just looking around the TW maps in the editor to see how things are done. You can even copy and paste some of their buildings into your own map and then use that as a reference when building your own. Hope that helps. :)

If your building is made out of BSP you can easily make a hole by using a sphere-shaped subtraction brush. If you go into Stalingrad Kessel you'll notice that a lot of the holes in the warehouse are made by subtracted tetrahedrons (spheres). Just go to the top view over the warehouse, select-drag across the whole thing and then you'll be able to see the highlighted yellow subtraction brushes.

Alternatively, take a look at Konigsplatz - quite a few bombed out buildings there for you to look at, particularly the Kroll Opera House and the street behind the Reichstag - even the distant buildings in the backdrop have a convincing look to them.

Good trick in the level is to hit the 'H' key on and off when in the perspective view port in the editor and you will see how everything is bolted together - what parts are using meshes and how BSP is used to construct the main body of the structure.
