”This is the B.B.C. and here is the 6 o’clock news…”
There was heavy fighting on the Eastern Front today as two German offensives were halted by our gallant Soviet allies.
An infantry assault from Axis map sector II against the city of Odessa carried out by the 3rd SS Panzer Division was annihilated by dismounted elements of the Soviet’s 181st Tank Brigade. This successful defense enables the Red Army to maintain their foothold in enemy territory by controlling Axis map sector III as a forward location from which to launch their expected counter-offensive deeper into the heart of Germany.
In the Baksan Valley region of Allied map sector XII, the Soviet’s 8th Guards Division defeated an attack by the 20th Panzergrenadier Division and forced the Germans back into their occupied Allied map sector XI. The 8th Guards are preparing an all-out offensive to relieve their long-suffering countrymen in sector XI who have been under German occupation since the opening phase of the campaign.
In Allied map sector XIII, the 3rd Shock Army and 193rd Rifle Division have completed their defensive preparations around the Rakowice airfield and expect an assault by the 5th SS Panzer Division at any time. Containing this assault is critical to the Soviet war effort as enemy control of map sector XIII could cut off the armored spearhead of 181st Tank Brigade in Axis map sector III and force the Soviet unit to delay its planned counter-offensive.
A task force of the 181st Tank Brigade has arrived in Allied map sector XIV to take up defensive positions at the village of Arad. An attack by mechanized forces of the German’s 9th and 2nd SS Panzer Divisions against this sector is expected as the enemy seeks to threaten the southern flank of the remainder of the Soviet defensive line.
Step forward, Comrades, and join the mighty 181st Tank Brigade!
