Squads and Weapons

I have to say I do like the squad mechanics in general and the improvements to the UI. It is now nice and easy to get organized in squads. This always felt very clunky in RO2/RS. So cheers to that.

On the other hand I see an issue with the current way weapons/specialist roles are being shared. You will often end up with or inside a squad that has no specialist roles. I would personally like to see the option for server admins to change this a bit. You would be able to do it similar to how Squad does it. If you are not part of a Squad, you can not take any specialist roles and you can only spawn as a grunt. I would like to see something similar.

What do you think?

Honestly aside from being a sniper (lone wolf, etc) I think's that's a great idea!
It gives even incentive for people to join a squad.

Sniping is pretty rare so far. The only sniper rifle so far is the Mosin and everything else is more or less a DMR. Most maps also don't really allow sniping in it's own sense. So I think you are better off actually playing it as a marksman.

a bit disappointed there are no weapon unlokcs like in RO2/RS 1

FOr eg would love to see 30 round mags for the M16, M16 with m203 nade launcher for M16 and the XM117 carbine as a unlock able, as well as alternate handguns ( revolvers ) for both sides.

I think most veteran players are very happy with the way things are right now with unlocks. The system in RO2 felt unfair and was also related to a grind that was not exactly fun and led to people just grinding bots to get a gun that was simply "better".

I'm fine with no weapon unlocks (I especially don't want to see the M16/203/xm148 combo).
I'd definitely like to see roles like the M60/M79 made available for 1 per squad. I know during the war M60's were used as platoon assets and not squad assets, but considering there's no middle ground like the BAR from RS I think it should be turned into a squad asset. There's a lack of consistent cover fire for both sides because of the current limit.

I'm totally fine with the sniper class being left to only 2 per team though.

First of all, Nooooooo!

Second, was the M203 even used in Vietnam?

WHy not Xm117 would be great for radioman or commander. Its just a carbine version with the m16, and is only semi auto and burst IRL. Balanced by not being full auto like the m16a1.

M16 with M203 would be great for the Grenadier class as a alternative to the m79, as a higher tier unlock and could be easily balanced by having less grenades.

Best suggestion in last 2 weeks.
Yes, amount of roles available should be per squad, not per game. Also squad leader should be able to change roles inside his squad.
So he can assign any role to any other player. More people play in squad - more different roles should appear.
Squad leader is also a role.
Then, if you join the game with friends - you can have any role you want (if you have enough players).
Also the problem with role selection - when the one who has faster pc can select any weapon is fixed.
Also, people may want to play more in squads since their roles will be more balanced.

I read a first hand account from a squad leader in a book a few years ago, he said that the problem with the M16/203 combination was that the grenadier would spend more time firing the rifle than the actual grenade launcher. I'm sure we'd end up seeing the same thing happen in game. The M79 when used correctly can be devastating, especially against bunkers and on maps like Hue. I wouldn't want to risk losing that support for a guy to basically run around as a riflemen

Well now that KF2 is getting an M16 w/ an M203 I might just buy the game just to get my hands on weapons models. Sorry TWI the KF series doesn't have that massive magnetic draw that the RO2 series has for me. It's safe to say if it's not going to happen officially I'll at least look into it unofficially :) Although from what I looked at earlier it seems some weapon master class overhauls are in order to support an M16 with a grenade launcher (with multiple ammo types) with a semi & automatic modes of fire. I really, really hope they clean up some code in weapons.

I sduppose he had a differentin opinon but overall history says otherwise. M79s are practically no longer used. SInce end of Vietnam they steady phased out over a period of time, in favor of having grenadier- riflemen carrying M16s with under barrel M203's. more practical. Clearly the latter was deemed to be a more effective option by the brass . The M203 was already reaching Standard issue status by the near end of Vietnam war period. In fact the criticism was that grenadiers could not fire M79s any faster anyhow . and at the same time they had no Primary weapon to defend themselves. It was impractical for a Grenadier to carry both a M16 ( as some prefered to carry that over a sidearm anyhow, because a pistol was not enough firepower) and the M79 at the same time due to the extra weight.

so Underbarrel launchers were very much practical & Ideal compromise for the Grenadier role.

That may be why the grenadier's of the military now are armed with the UGL, but for the sake of realism I wouldn't want to see the M16/M203 in RS2. It didn't arrive in Vietnam until 1969, and even then the numbers weren't high enough for it to have a place in the game imo. If you read books set during the 69 - 72 period of the war the M79 is usually the grenade launcher you see in it.
We might get away with the M16/XM148 combination, but even that would be iffy because the rarity of them
