[Game] Most disappointing game of 2010?

Now that 2010 is over, anyone want to share their most disappointing game they have played in 2010?

For me it is easy: HAWX 2.

Technically I played most of it in 2011, but I started in 2010. :p

I paid $38 for it. I would have regretted it at $20.

Big rant here:

I looked at reviews, and people seemed to say it was as good, or better than HAWX 1. I enjoyed HAWX 1, it felt like a crappy version of Ace Combat. Nevertheless, I had fun with it. So I thought buying HAWX 2 early to play with others online would be a good idea...

But HAWX 2 is worse in every single way.

The enemy aircraft look extremely awkward when they fly. Much more so than in HAWX1. Looks like something out of Starwars Starfighter.

*spoilers*

It is a rip off of CoD MW1/2 in terms of the story. The same old Middle Eastern terrorists and Russian ultra-nationalist attacks the world with a nuke garbage. It is even dumber than HAWX 1's story - which I thought would be impossible.

*spoilers*

Not only is the story a near exact rip off of MW1/2, but so is the gameplay. In many missions, you control a UAV. These missions are the same as the "stealth" missions in CoD games. You do what the game tells you to, and you will automatically win.

These missions comprise of using 5 buttons on your keyboard. An arrow points to where you must slew your camera. You either hold your camera there, or it tells you to press the space bar. How utterly boring.

To make matters worse, the flight model is even more awkward than it was in HAWX 1. The flight model is almost as bad as BF2, and this is a game that is centered around flight.

The missions are often shorter and lamer. One mission has you shoot at a truck that is driving down a city. In a plane. Seems like a mission better suited for a game like CoD or MoH. Missions do not seem to be made with aerial combat in mind. Too many "escort the super spy to location X" type stuff.

There is also an AC-130 gunner mission.... that feels less authentic than the one in CoD 4.

To top it off, I would have expected some decent production values. Nicely rendered cutsenes and whatnot even if the game itself sucked. This is an Ubisoft game afterall. You'd think they would have thrown money into the presentation and cut scenes. However, the cutscenes are poorly done. It feels like a budget title.

Just about everything else is awful: the sounds, bad hit boxes that kill you 5x more than any enemy will, the music, the unresponsive controls.

The only thing better in HAWX 2 over 1 is that friendlies can kill enemies with decent proficiency.

I think I would have had more fun replaying HAWX 1.

So, that was my worst game of 2010. :) What was yours?

AvP would be second on my list, but the MP demo alone told me the game was going to be a train wreck. So I curbed my enthusiasm for that game pretty hard, and I'm glad.

It's unfortunate, too. Other than the ****ty performance, redundant campaign and lack of content, there were a lot of good things happening there. Hope Bungie can resurrect the title from suckitude.

@SheepDip: AC was awesome, but you may want to still look into AC2 or Brotherhood since everyone feels they are leaps and bounds (no pun intended) beyond the first game.

Yeah I picked up 1 and 2 so I'm forcing myself through for continuities sake.

I keep getting vibes of Sands of Time, only the constant pulling you out of the game and largely un-interesting nature of the modern day warbling keeps breaking up the better stuff.

I say Mafia 2, I mean I liked the cars and that fat guy was funny, but it sucked, its like your a mob hitman, but you have to go and kill 5923852750824076504396 people, with no kind of creativity or anything, its just Gears of War in the 50's, and the story was lame.

With the Assassins Creed games I like the story, setting and characters, but I think the combat is too easy, its just press the X button to win.

I like Mount and Blade Warband far better for actual Medieval combat though.

Surprised to see ME2 here.

I agree the maps where a bit small, and the story was not as good as ME1, but you guys must have played some really good games if ME2 was your worst. :p
Same here. In the beginning I was a bit disappointed about some changes and the "shooter-isation" of the game, but after the release of larger DLCs like Overlord and LotSB I can't really decide anymore which ME is better. Well, what really disappointed me this year was Mafia 2. I had huge expectations for this game for years because I loved the first one, but Mafia 2 turned out to be a crap (although it had a few great moments). So many things were cut from the final version of the game I started thinking that 2K Games screwed with it intentionally, since they also own Rockstar and Mafia could be a threat to the GTA series. That's why indie companies tend to be the best.

Mass Effect 2
- Corridor shooting, cutscene, paragon/renegade decision, rinse repeat
- Too many annoying squadmates
- Launching probes, whose idea was that ****?
- Story went bananas

Thank you! I'm not the only one who thought this. Especially your first bullet point. Still not a bad game and was only 10 bucks for me but what I'm seeing has been extremely overrated thus far. It's more like a solid 7-8/10, hardly a game of the year like it gets on pretty much every damn site.

Like Sheepdip I avoided buying all the biggest disappointments. But from preview expectations I have to say Medal of Honor seeing as how Allied Assault is one of the greatest fps's ever made and it's all been downhill since then, this latest one being the lowest point in the franchise.

Also just as a sidenote, biggest pleasant surprise: BC2

This. The meta-conspiracy is cliche, but the actual interior story of AC1, I found compelling. Plus I love the setting.

The rest of the game was meh. I liked combat when I was fighting 8 guys at once. The rest was too easy/repetitious.

AC2 is almost the polar opposite for me. Still love the setting. Still hate the meta-plot. But the game play is much, much, much improved.

Unfortunately, for me, the interior story is just kind of rambling and boring, and the characters are far less interesting than in AC1. I actually took the time to think about the bad guy's motives in AC1. In AC2, they're just "Muwhwhahahah" bad buys who say "For the greater good."

Still, people that didn't like AC1 might find AC2 redeems itself as a game.

ME1 had a better story. And I would imagine that if you skipped ME1, it would not be that interesting. Probably one of the worst series to pick up half way through.

I didn't like how small the maps where, but it is not a shooter in the first place. Often times I spend an hour or so just talking to characters.

At $12 I'll agree with you. The MP is much better than the SP I played months ago.

I like AC1 for the storyline, I thought the modern parts actually fit in well, and Altair struggled between being a good guy or bad guy and it was all really subtle, AC2 while not having as good of a story and the modern times being pointless, still had AWESOME characters, especially Ezio and Leonardo Da Vinci, there were many magical moments, it has to be the most beautiful game world ever created (since its based off Rennaissance Italy) the Subject 16 puzzles and the Prince of Persia puzzle things set in real life historical locations were amazing. Brotherhood was just like an expansion to AC2, $60 no less since its a mainstream console game, it was good but not a whole new sequel, and the modern times make even less sense.

I think Mass Effect 2 was a great game, but there were 3 big problems....

1: Shepard takes and gives out way more damage than everyone else, he's like a tank, and you never really use your teamates except to distract the enemy.

2: Your teamates are way to messed up, most of them are either emo or wackjobs, while there were many great characters, it was almost too much and made the Normandy into a mental asylum with Shepard as the Psychiatrist.

3: The story is not subtle at all, in any way, I completely understand what the Reapers are, there is no mystery.
