My speculation:

The game is ready, absolutely 100% Bug Free (that's why the devs get the newly introduced gaming developement nobel price for it...) but they feast at our longing and arouse themselves at our despair. They keep teasing us, until we get physical pain for not being able to play it, and then they release it for 100$ and make a huge profit.

Mod versions were usually released on a Friday, I think it's safe to bet the game will be too. But I could be completely off.
