KF1 was 6 player co-op (though there are mods that allow a lot more players). It's not really like L4D. You don't have a scripted campaign you progress through. Basically you're fending off waves of enemies who come after you. Each wave has progressively more enemies and newer more difficult types. You earn cash for killing them and between rounds you make your way to a trader and buy new guns and ammunition. The final wave has a boss called the Patriarch. Not sure if that's going to be the same boss in KF2, but I imagine he'll be there in some form.
So, KF is more of a defensive game. Hole up somewhere and try to fend them off, or run for your life.
Very unlike L4D. KF is a pretty brutal arena co-op shooter with excellent gunplay and stuff like Zed time effects and a level-up system. It's a pretty chunky game compared to L4D. But if you like co-op, you'll like KF.
I think the only similarities LFD and KF even share is the fact that they are both "zombie" themed FPS games. I think that's pretty much where any similarities end.
