Spoiler!Spoiler!Spoiler! The Ball is the power source of a spaceship, although that actually isn't really what the true point is. The point is that aliens came to earth thousands of years ago and kick-started civilization.
They brought farmers and hunter/gatherers into their world deep inside the volcano, and educated them. They taught them civilization and culture, technology, time and space, and so on. But the people couldn't handle the knowledge. Some became corrupt or hungry for power. Others abused the power and knowledge they were given. Some became superstitious and saw the aliens as Gods instead, and science became magic for them, magic they could not understand, magic they thus feared and began to oppose. They essentially created the concept of religion. A civil war broke out between the two sides, and the ones that opposed the alien science won. They stole the most important item from the Aliens, their power source, brought it all the way back to almost the outside world, and then locked the entire world down layer by layer, burying everyone alive inside the volcano. The Ball and the weapon were so close to the outside world because it was not about protecting them from the world outside, rather to keep what is inside the volcano in. All the puzzles were not meant to keep outsiders out, but to keep the ones inside in.
The superstitious group that stole the Ball settled outside the volcano, and brought forth civilization as we know it. Their betrayal and superstition shaped the world as we still know it today the day, with all its problems and wars.
This ties into Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and Pandora's Box. Humanity lived in paradise and harmony, but some could not manage. Their betrayal ended paradise and brought forth a troubled world.
It is not really a cliche ending. I think it is a very interesting concept. Stories and concepts become cliche exactly because they are so powerful. We could have come up with a story about an intelligent species living deep under the earth's surface, or such, but I think given the vastness of space aliens are more credible.
Thanks for telling us this, it's cleared up quite a bit of info. But just to be clear....
Spoiler!I believe that the aliens were the Tlaloc, correct? Or were they the servant race of the original aliens? The mummy king that helped your character in the game looks loosely similar to the Tlaloc, but there are alot of differences in his looks (such as not being anywhere near as bulky as a normal Tlaloc, and his head looks different). Then again, he could look different because he's a mummy). Also, how do the mummies and various undead come into play? Were they created as guardians? And were they created by magic means, or by technology? And lastely, what caused some of the creatures (such as the bugs and worms) to mutate and expand in size?
Not a proper way but you can...
Spoiler!...go to the game's install directory, UDKGame\Localization\INT\TheBallSecretStories.int, open it in notepad.
YepWhen people use spoiler tags, it's to try and make the reader look AWAY!
The spoiler tag is a big shiny button, so as a result of that and human instinct, it always does the exact opposite.
