[Sport] 2008 Beijing Olympics discussion

If nike or any other brand was made in a western country, you would be paying 4x the price. We need cheap goods and they need the business!

Stop complaining and accept reality!

not really m8, people that sewed the worldcup soccer balls together got like 2 cents per balloon, the same balloons ended up in our stores at $100...
same with clothes, everybody expected clothes to become cheaper now that they can be imported without limit from china. but what really happened is that the price remained exactly the same, only the profit margin increased for the merchant.

and china certainly doesn't need the business, its industry and economy is growing so fast, giving china a record high inflation. wich means that the chinese live in a modern rich economy, but with the average income of a 3rd world country. it means they can't even buy the crap they produce, while everything in their country gets more expensive. by using them as modern slaves, we just make their situation worse.

but thats not at all why i have a problem with the olympics in china

At the end of the day, if we made the products made in Chine, India, Taiwan etc etc we would be the ones unable to afford said products!

But I do see where you're coming from and I agree. BUT commercialism dictates different Im afraid

Well, that is true but, even so, as the (mainland) People's Republic of China's official attitude has always been that Taiwan is a renegade province, it does seem odd that there should be representatives of the country at the olympics.

Only a few world leaders have actually had the balls to openly acknowledge that Taiwan is a country and treat them accordingly in face of (PRC) Chinese disapproval - Vaclav Havel being one of them - and now they appear to have been granted (semi-)nation status.

To put this in perspective, imagine the CSA fielding a team at the London olympics (that's the Confederated States of America btw) and no-one even mentioning that it seemed odd.

*btw I am not saying that the CSA thing should happen, or that taiwan is not a country, very far from it; I am just trying to illustrate that this seems to be a helluvan about face that snuck in under the radar.

Anyone else find the judges biased against the women's gymnastic team? And I mean really, like the Chinese women's gymnastic team is 15 minimum. If only the birth certificates hadn't been tampered by the government  Phelps however is kicking butt and taking names, unfortunately the American womens' swim team isn't :(
