it might, but spongiform comes from the consumption of human meat, while wendigo simply leads to it, so I can't see much connection there besides both dealing with cannibalism. Unless maybe they worked together as a sort of cooperating species of disease, but I thought spongiform was in the Pacific, versus the Algonquin origin and spread of wendigo (plus, the two never seemed to have the same range at the same time)

of course, anything is possible, so don't count it out.
