The AR15 trying to be like an AK in that it's adopting a larger intermediate caliber round of similar power of a 7.62x39.

That doesn't make any sense. The ballistics are rather different between 7.62x51 and 7.62x39. The design philosophies behind the two rifles are rather different as well.

If anything modern AKs are trying to be like ARs. With the caliber change to 5.45x39 (copying the 5.56x45 concept, much like they did with 7.62x25 and 9x18). Even that picture you linked to uses multiple parts/features originally designed for AR-15s, including pictianny rails and AR-15 stocks in addition to western optics.

Here is a video of Russians with Eotechs (or clones):

The Americans went with the 6.8 SPC, which is of similar power to the 7.62x39. And the Americans went the way of the piston like the AK.

The 6.8 was never meant as a near exact copy of the 7.62x39 (unlike the Russia/Soviet designed cartridges I listed). Though, it is rather similar. But it was not designed to make the AR like an AK. They are still two entirely different designs. And the US military is still using 5.56 and 7.62x51. Aside from maybe a few units, 6.8 is hardly used. With it having less flat trajectory (if I recall correctly), I don't see it replacing 5.56 or 7.62x51.

As for piston ARs, they existed back in the 1960s. I would think it was designed because it would not get as dirty as quick, not because the AK happened to use a piston. Many rifles use pistons. The push for designing cleaner running ARs was probably influenced more by SIG-551s and G-36s than AKs.

Personally i see the AK-style safety as quite well located. It's in easy reach of my off-hand, and i don't have to reach over to use it.

I'm a fan of the original design, so no rails or anything, though an in-line stock would be nice.

As i said earlier, a HK416/17 would be better than the normal AR10/15 or M16/M4.

Insurgents seem to be allergic to 5.56...

The SA80 family is partially derived from the AR18, so i'll cede you ground there :p

The SAS and other UK SF units have used C8s for years instead of the SA80. ;)

They also used some SPRs for the marksmen role for a short while. I believe they were borrowed from the US military:

You'd think if the reliability issues were even noteworthy they would have been dumped long ago.
