Been thinking of this for some time now. If I were to host a 16-24 player server (Dallas, Tx) with the following settings, would you play on it? I'm just looking to see if it would be worth the time to get this up and running.

Infantry Server
Limited SMGs
No Respawns
No Objectives
Shorter Round Times

Basically, a team elimination server where each team starts on opposite sides of the map and the objective would be to eliminate the other team.

No. Sounds to much like Americas Army where matches can go on for 5-10 minutes while everyone else who died is forced to watch on, causing people to leave. Terrible idea.

I was into the first two settings, but then I saw the last two.

Why would I want to wait around for some joker who is hidden in some corner of the map? If you had some decent friends to play against it might work, otherwise I don't think so. Who is actually going to respect a house rule like "No hiding....keep moving"?

Thats exactly what I was thinking. The first 2 options are great, but instead of having no respawns, have "extended" respawn times of 15-20 seconds. A no objectives idea would be interesting though.

Extended respawns is a good idea. This is something to consider.

Worst idea ever.

Please explain your reasons and don't just state "Worst idea ever." Your argument has no weight. But, I thank you for your attempt at feedback.

Updated the original post to include shorter round times. This way those that have no tactics and just run into the enemy with a grenade in hand only to get shot don't have to wait as long for the next round to start. Since this seems to be the tactics of most players around these days. I know kids today aren't use to death penalties and like the respawn, nade, respawn, nade, respawn, nade game play. I guess with that in mind it is the "worst idea ever." I seem to have forgotten that the only players left around here are the ones who find 50 player Danzig to be enjoyable.

I dont know what the obbession with 50-player Danzig is. It's not even that great of a map, everyones forgotten about Kurland Kessel, Krovoi Rog Mannikila** and others.

no respawn could work, but no objectives is total madness. you need a objective to encourage the people to attack.

No objectives is a bad idea: in combination with no respawns it'll lead to a campfest. No respawns is a good idea imo, but probably doesn't work on RO's chokepoint maps. So you'll have to pick maps very carefully. Danzig for example wouldn't work at all.

I think if you lose the objectives, you lose the attraction of many to RO. TDM is the predominately played game on most other FPS's. Far too common for RO. With no respawn, it turns into a game of "hide and seek". Might as well just give everyone a sniper rifle.

Its been kicked around in other areas of the forums, but perhaps :
limited weapons/classes
limited lives (two or three lives)
objectives
shorter round times on selected maps

Those are just my thoughts and opinion.
Keep in mind, there will always be those that hate any idea and can do whatever you can do better.

All good points. Thanks for the feedback thus far. So, no respawn with one good objective? That seems like it would work.

I'm just trying to think of ideas to make a life mean something other than run in with guns blazing and nades flying with no fear of death since another respawn is another 10 seconds away.

Probably not, all it takes is one idiot to tk you and you could be sitting out an extended time.

With the right group of player, right maps, maybe once in a blue moon, but definately not often.

Good luck though

Limited unit or adjust classes = good
no respawn = good
no objective = Sux

Every military action has a goal, even CS has a goal if you play it right. Your either defending or attacking.

Just killing cause your board, go play space invaders or something like AMA.
