Worst World War II (Themed) Movie Ever....

WickedPenguin said:
* Das Boot: This movie really tells it like it is, with no punches pulled. From the production design (where they actually built a full-size submarine, rivet for rivet, and mounted it on hydraulics to get the "sea" motion) to the excellent cast and acting, down to the Hollywood-unfriendly ending.

yep. one of the best movies. and its a true story.

* The Thin Red Line: It's like they decided to make a war movie, and forgot to add in the war. I saw this movie once in the theatres and have never desired to see it again. I'm not against art films in any way - however, this film was poorly executed and was completely misrepresented in its advertising.
* U-571: Bon Jovi? Yeah... I was actually excited to see this movie, despite his being casted in it. However, I caught it on TV a couple of years back and was very glad I saved the money.
* Pearl Harbor: Wow....just.... wow....
Well, like I said. Thin Red Line... you either hate it or love it. I for one can't agree with you: I actually liked how they decided to be a little more calm and less arcade and develop the characters instead of throwing stereotypes at you and then glue a bunch of rather random and grotesque fighting scenes together like SPR:

*the all-knowing, all-seeing 'i don't want to be here but i have to'-captain? check
*his tough, loyal sidekick? check
*the troublemaker? check
*the sissy book-worm, who in the end turns into a real man? check
*the obligatory jew? check
*the bible-quoting sniper? check

Also note how the GIs get all the cool kills: the one guy throwing the helmet against the German then killing him with the .45, the McGyver "glue bombs" against the Tiger, self-made mortar-handgrenades... all the Germans get is unfair MG42 kills, or they shoot them in the back, or the SS-man stabs the Jew while talking him fiendishly to his death.

Sticky bombs were a real weapon and if I remember correctly, were actually in the army field manual.

They also weren't "self made" mortar grenades, they just took mortar rounds and bashed them against the base plate, arming them. If this is realistic or not I do not know, but they were not "self made" as described.

Band of Brothers is absolutely incredible, hands down. When I first watched it years ago, I mainly payed attention to the action scenes, and that was about it. When I went back and watched it again, I focused on the characterization and underlying storyline that was carried through from each episode, plus I focused on the point each episode was trying to make. Some of that stuff is really, really powerful - the medic episode comes to mind.

Now, I really, really loved Saving Private Ryan, but you have to remember that up until its release, nothing like it had ever really been done before in the United States. I find just through reading this thread that a lot of Europeans have the same exposure to Hollywood that Americans do, but the reverse just isn't true. I've seen Stalingrad, and while I didn't think it was a bad movie, I don't think it would have "flied" if it were released in the United States. Not only are we years behind Europeans in our moralistic viewpoint of life (ties into a lot of our Puritan background I think), but as a nation that's quite isolated in the world, I don't think we can ever truely understand the toils of hardships that the European nations went through during the Second World War. Saving Private Ryan, while exclusively American in its presentation, at least gave us a glimpse of what war is a bit more realistically like, and there ain't no John Waynes there.

Schindler's List - I'd have to say it's right up there with Band of Brothers. Yes, it's Spielberg, but Ralph Fiennes's performance of Amon Goeth is ****ing outstanding. I'm biased though. I love a good diabolical character. :)

Downfall - Intense, intense, intense. This movie was awesome. Rent it / buy it if you haven't seen it yet.

The Pianist - I love Roman Polanski films.

Worst Films - Pearl Harbor, Windtalkers, probably more that I can't think of right now.

Lol, look to the right. It says "Lithuania", doesn't it? :) It is a country near Baltic sea, post-Soviet union territory, heh.
I never look at those....:( My grandfather(deceased)was from there, left just before russians invaded. I think alot of you are expecting WAY too much from these movies, theyre supposed to enterain, NOT be a classroom-useable history lesson. Dialogue, character development, ect, if theyre poor, fine, its a bad movie. But dont jump on peoples case because "Thats not the right tank" the tacticsa are all wrong! This isnt realistoc!" Maybe its not supposed to be, or maybe, its how the story(ie, FICTIONAL ACCOUNT of WW2 events) is meant to be told. I think it might get a little expesive, looking for all the "real" equipment, study material on tactics and interviews with vets to learn truth of events. Sometimes, those events are boring! Dont remember who, but someone said Memphis Belle's last run was a "milk run"(easy). Would you pay 8 bucks or so to watch that?

Best WW2 movies for me: "They fought for Motherland", "I'm Russian soldier" (it's about Brest's fortress), "In August of 44" and "Star" (the old one, the remake is worse, but still it's a good movie). Those all are russian movies. Also i kinda liked "Der Stalingrad", "Das Boot". Also i watched "The dirty dozen" - i'm sure it's historicaly inacurate, but the impression was nice.
Now about Enemy at the Gates. That's why. http://www.battlefield.ru/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=206&Itemid=108&lang=en Please, read.

Where can I get many of those movies? :)

Edit: looks in coulour (this a western remake?) http://www.ruscico.com/detail.php?lang=en&film=322

From my little bit of German, I think he was actually telling him that everything was going to be ok while he stabbed him(backed up by what my German teacher told me, of course he could have lied because he didnt want to say what he really said) . So, it is possible to take as he was trying to comfort him in his time of death. Correct me if I am wrong, I am sure half of you speak German.

SPR is good becasue it shows how bloody war was and the special effects were really good. The story was really bad but at least Vin Diesel got shot early, hes an idiot.

Worst movie ever was Pearl Harbor. I think they said, "lets see, we'll take a compelling true story that everyone knows about and could be really good and turn it into a bad love story." How they managed to turn that into a bad love story perplexes me and why to this day. Makes me wanna slap Ben Aflack.
