Hello.
So I have been thinking of buying RO2:HOS for a week now, it's really awesome. Played it at my friends place. Asked developers and sellers some details about it. I already know that there are no swastikas in any after beta releases, also special editions just instantly unlock items that can be unlocked for free over time.

I would buy the boxed CD version. The thing is, will I'll be able to play online rated without all that steam dependence? I hate steam.
If I must permanently register game with steam account to play ranked, then I won't buy it.

Its digital, no hard copy. It requires internet to install game. And I believe if steam lag or crashes then theres no way to play online or it lags. Steam monopoly is ****. Why did Tripwire even release DVD? After you buy DVD and install the game, you need some software to play it online? No thanks!
Rather Tunngle then. Or back to ARMA 2.
Still, its really fun game. But damm steamworks. Was it like that with OstFront too?

I've used Steam since beta, and it's never had any down sides for me, so I never get Steam hate.

Mm, like I said, I've used Steam since it was in beta form, and have only had one issue, and that was friends list not working. Besides that, Steam has always been perfect for me.

No, the game isn't lag or crash if steam does. Also i never had crashes in steam, steam is just kind of launcher, and if you haven't internet connection you can still play running steam in offline mode.
Steam is really very useful thing. It makes easy to update game, check cache integrity if something wrong with game files. I wonder why don't you like it

I don't like the idea of having program in the background of the game. But if you say it is perfect and never crashes (even google sometimes crash), well maybe I'll give it a try.

But if I have the DVD. I install the game and I can play online on any steam account? Or I have to register it to one account? After registering, is the DVD of any use? If not then why do they sell the DVD?

Once you add the game to a steam account, it belongs to that account and that account only. You can log into that steam account from another computer and download/install the game any time as many times as you want. You can still use the DVD to install the game. Which should be faster than downloading all the files before installing. Of course you'll still want to download patches. Besides, some people have bandwidth concerns.

Steam really isn't bad, in fact it's good. I used to hate it though. I've never been crazy about leaving things I don't use running on my computer. I have a lot of resources available these days, and I use steam anyway, so I don't mind it running. I also hated the idea of all my games being digital. No disc, no paper manual. You get used to it though. Times have changed and it's rather convenient really. If I install steam on a computer, all of my 'steam games' are listed once I log into my account. From there I can select what I want to install and steam will download and install the game, and it will be up to date.

I still HATE having to read a manual on the computer though. I'd much rather have a book that I can flip through while the game is paused. Printing out big manuals for the games that need them is just not practical for me. Nowadays, I expect games to explain themselves through tutorials so I don't have to read a manual.

Anyway, I finally stopped resisting steam years ago. What won me over was the incredible sales that steam frequently offers. Kind of hard to hate on steam and digital purchases when the same games I want can be had on the cheap. You still get the game, it works just the same. It's actually kind of spoiled me. Because the sales are so frequent, I feel like I can't buy a game unless it's on sale. I've seen so many games wind up being 30-75%+ off that I'd feel like I was throwing money away if I didn't wait.

So yea, steam is pretty cool. The only big problem I've ever had with steam; purchasing Battlefield 2 on steam and getting kicked from every server because of the steam overlay. Simple enough fix, just disable the steam overlay. I also had problems with the cd key apparently. It was an ordeal. I also hated how every time I tried to start BF2 it would try to get me to install 'Gamespy Comrade'. I finally installed it just to make it quit asking.

Edit. I just realized something. Red Orchestra was the first game to make me use steam. I wonder how much longer I would've put steam off if RO didn't require it. heh

I have 210 Steam games and counting.

I freaking love the service. It's unobstructive, insanely easy to use, full of fantastic sales (they overcharge most of the time, but when sale time rolls around they basically give games away for insanely low prices), and it never causes issues on my machine. The only thing that really irks me about it is the iffy offline mode, but even that's getting better.

The only thing that might cause problems with your game is the Steam Overlay, that lets you access the chat program and web browser while in game, and that can be turned off with a single click.

I have some more questions:

1. If I buy the game through steam, will it install in its steamaps folder? Can I somehow install in D:\Program Files.... And what about DVD. Will it install to steamaps only?

2. Is there any exclusive content in some particular version, that is not available on other versions?

Every version is the same (except for some pre-order bonus items that you can unlock with normal play), and it will always install to the steamapps directory.

DVD version installs in steamapps? That just sucks :(

Steamapps is a subfolder of Program Files.

Not sure what the difference is. It's just a directory.

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\

Not that much harder than Program Files, IMHO, and it won't affect anything important...

I wont affect installing mods?
