Wireless Router Help

Hi there,

Im looking to buy a wireless router to link 2 computers and an xbox 360, and I cannot get my head round what difference 54 mb/s or 108mb/s makes with a 8MB broadband connection.

Will 54mb/s allow the whole 8MB broadband to be used, as i was under the impression that MB=mb divided by 8, making a 54 mb/s router only able of giving a max of 6.75MB connection?

Or are mb/s and connection speed unrelated and im confused... internet guides are confusing me

(edit) have since then looked again and are confused by 802.11g 802.11a 802.11b and all this jazz. Simply put what speed do i need for an 8MB broadband connection to be fully used by my router, so non is wasted. The mb/s is confusing as its different from MB connection speed?

Trust me on this, you *dont* have an 8 Megabyte/sec internet connection. Even if a salesman told you so. Unless your home is wired directly into the internet backbone network . So 54Mb/s would be just fine.

Imagine... a full DVD down in less than 10 mins

well i realise that it wont be full 8mb i was just after some info into what difference 54mb/s or 108mb/s router would make to me, if any?

54Mbps will be fine, unless you plan on copying huge files between your computers on the local network. It wont affect your connection speed to the internet, only your local network speed. For instance, copying several Gigs of data between computers will require at least a 100Mbps connection unless you are of the patient sort

AFAIK, to get the full effect of a 108Mbps wireless router often requires that you only have equipment from the same vendor, for instance you will need your PCs to have the same cards. 108Mbps routers use special magic that are not part of the 802.11g standard. I think.
