I may not be a successful level designer, but I've got a lot of experience at what doesn't work :p

A-freakin'-men, brother! Story of my life! I could fill a hard drive with all of my failed ideas and do-overs!

...actually, that gives me an idea that I'll start another thread for.

So I've been fiddling around with ideas for the defenses. I know they're called "rifle trenches" but maybe we could incorporate the trench style from caps on Guadalcanal, Kobura, Betio, Phosphate, etc. (the meshes are actually above ground but make it look like they're not, it also in my own opinion looks better. Not the layout but the style. It seems to me that it would give the player more mobility, create a larger environment & best of all make it easier to incorporate more elaborate designs, not to mention makin it easier for us to set up defenses. (Pun intended :p)

Sounds like a great idea!

Historically, all Makin defenses were, for the most part, above ground. Reasons: An average elevation of less than 2 meters, a shallow water table, and extremely hard coral rock just under the top soil/sand.

I say "for the most part", since some were dug in a few feet, then built up and covered. Bunkers and Pill Boxes prime examples. And these were usually converted Taro pits that took natives generations to hollow out to grow the ediable roots using the brackish ground water that would flood the basin.

The only serious excavations were the two anti-tank ditches.

Very impressive. This one is going to be as accurate as is possible given the limitations of the design tools.

We all know the industrial/construction area on Betio, well it will be something like this (except more dense, and spread out over a 80m^2 area to provide some intense firefights):

This is where optimization will be key, as shown in green (via a grass material) is where dense foliage with no man-made structures are located, making it perfect for flanking attempts, and maybe even ambushes...

I think Twrecks is dead, because he isn't responding to my PM's at this point I want his input as it is also his map.
Anyways as a placeholder (might not be in the end) I've made a planar palm tree mesh as a facade.
Placement can be seen here:
