[wip] lcvp

It's not as hard as you think it is. Many tutorials out there. TBH the hardest thing about making maps is having "patience."

Wolverine is right on this, it's mainly patience and not skill. It isn't as hard to learn as one might think, yes it can get complicated but it is more or less the ability to follow through with the idea and not give up. Being stubborn is key. :D

What the hell then might as well give it a try, but **** map making has changed since 1942

Hey just a quick question, can I make the map and then add in things like spawn points and objectives when I'm done or do they have to be done first?

You can make a whole scene and then add everything else later. However I would set up your WorldInfo file first. As sometimes it doesn't allow you to make one for a particular saved map. Meaning you gotta start again. UDK bugs. So do that first.

^Were they changed for each front?

Not really. They all had different variations but that was due to where/when they were made not where they were deployed. On a few pacific ones they did try sticking .50 cals on them but that didn't work as they were too big. You had to lie down on the back to be able to fire it lol. So they kept their .30s.

Many of them after the war were re-purposed as civilian barges. They were sturdy, fast and could deal with better swells than other barges though carrying a bit less. Because of that there's barely any around today as most woulda been scrapped after civilian use.

The two MG's provided effective suppressive fire onto enemy defences. More useful on Japanese islands though rather than against a large beach with cliffs at the back. Gunners at normandy found themselves large exposed stationary targets so many of them jumped out and ran up with everyone else if their landing craft was rendered immovable which many were after hitting the beach. But they did all have guns and it did keep the germans heads down making it very difficult to move from one set of defences to another.

That LCVP at some point has been modified to have it's gunner cockpits removed which was a post war modification on some of them. That particular one also never saw action in the western front lol.

Read my 1st post!

Maybe this particular LCVP wasn't in Normandy, yet sister Higgins absolutely were part of the landing. True, not as common as the USMC version, with the two .30 cal gun wells and the front "bumps" for the cable wheel.

However, the .30 cal guns were hardly ever used for ground support, as rocking of the boat made it more of a hazard to friendlies than use for suppressive fire. Afterall, they were there primarily for "anti-aircraft". Yea, for a game this may be useful, but the coding/animation required to implement this feature might shelve the project.

This non-gun-well version became the standard LCVP build after WW2. By Vietnam, had a fiber-glass hull, yet outwardly identical.

Some stuff for LST-325, which was at Normandy (yea, the resorded LCVPs are fiber-glass, yet are the right "issue" according to vets):

From 1950 (as built):

Notice the hand cranked gear box on the right side (starboard). There's no complex counter-balance for the door, as seen on the USMC version. Gun wells would have interfered with this feature.

Dang, I missed the horn on the port side!

So you've gone for some rare one then lol. ...

:D Not for the navy. As long as it's grey with a white diamond on the side it'll pass for an Normandy invasion LCVP. (LOL, they used the Navy LCVP in Saving Private Ryan).

Yea, the Marine Corps double bucket would have been a better choice to model. Forgotten Hope 2 had a really nice model of it. Don't know if they ever got the brownings working:

They got the Mgs working in FH2. Which balanced out the whole map lol. As before it was just a german win on the beach all the time.

Yea, considering the allies will also lack a radio for calling arty, it will be like shooting fish in a barrel. No fun for the fish. Pushing the German spawn back might help some, though with the advantage of strategic cover, may not be enough.

I'd like to see the allies get control of a destroyer's 5" gun for support. The role (spawn volume) could then be deactivated after the beach is taken.
